Enrollment requirements for All A?

Featured Replies

After seeing the enrollment of some of the schools in the All A this year, I was wondering what the requirements are.  I thought I used to be under 500, and I’ve also heard the 125 smallest schools.

There’s not an arbitrary number set to what the enrollment should be. The All A organization simply take the smallest 125 school enrollments of the teams who want to participate in the statewide tournament. The reason the number has reached into the mid 500’s as acceptable is there have been so many consolations of schools, particularly in eastern Kentucky. In 1990 when the tournament went statewide the number was around 400 to qualify for the tournament but since then schools that once played in it are no longer around. In my 14th region over the last 30 years we have lost Dilce Combs, Fleming-Neon, Letcher High, and Whitesburg, all to consolidations. In Harlan County Evarts, Cumberland, both All A schools, combined with Cawood to form Harlan County High. Pike County and Floyd have also lost All A schools to consolidation. I’m sure the same has happened all across the state. The loss of so many schools has slowly edged the required number to get into the tournament from around 400 to about 550 because there’s less high schools schools in the state now than there was in 1990. That has allowed larger schools to qualify for the 125 number of schools for the tournament.
In addition, some schools in my region that once had 1000-1200 students are now down to the mid 500’s. Loss of the coal industry business and jobs have lowered their school enrollments to numbers acceptable to the All A.

That chart is eye popping.

Is that total students in 9-12? Or is it Boys in 9-12?

Shocking if total students that Evangel Christian could have a 6’10 kid and two 6’8 kids in a school of 37!!!

Total enrollment. All "A" originally used grades 10-12 but I think it's 9-12 now.

Props to Danville Christian, 41 total high school students and BOTH boys and girls won their region to advance to EKU for the All A Classic.  That is really impressive.

They are a bit of an outlier given the way the school constructs their enrollment.
