If you think these announcers were entertaining you should listen to their radio announcer, Dickie Martin. He absolutely cracks me up. He has maroon blood flowing through his veins. They were playing a game a couple years ago in West Virginia and Dickie got aggravated with one of the officials. “This one ref here is a real piece of work! Jeez! Read a rule book buddy!”

He’s been doing Ashland broadcast for about 50 years, and his father did them for decades before Dickie took over.

I agree.  I like listening to Dickie Martin.  He is very entertaining sometimes.  ?

  • Agreed, a nice win for Ashland but not unexpected.  Covington Catholic came into tonights game leading the state in shooting percentage at 56.4% while averaging 76.4 points per game.  Tonight Ashland

Just finished watching the game.  Thanks @B-Ball-fan for posting the video.  I must say that was a great production!  Top notch. Turnovers were the key issue with Cov Cath in that game, I think t

Back on topic.  How did they beat them?  better coaching?  better players? better on this day?

The answer to all your questions is yes.

The game was already decided with 56 seconds remaining in the game,  Ashland was leading 66-50 with Covington Catholic still pressing Ashland full court and fouling to get the ball back.  You have to give them credit, Covington Catholic never quit but Ashland is a 77% free throw shooting team and the players who usually handle the ball against the press are better than that. Ipsaro scored 8 of his 21 points in the last 67 seconds of the game and that may tell you how well Ashland handled him. His last basket was a dunk with a half second remaining in the game.

My take. Two things.

1. Ashland 3 point shooting. Ashland did a good job moving the ball on offense, getting open looks and making 3's.

2. Good defense on Ipsaro. Ashland made him a non factor in the game with their defense. As mentioned above, Ipsaro got his points after this game was decided.

CCH should have pounded the ball inside to Rylee more. Rylee could have scored 40 in this one. Ashland had no answer for him inside.

I agree with everything but Rylee having 40.  The Tomcats have proven this year that they can guard the post regardless of size.  These kids get after it on defense.  I love watching them play.

Well they sure couldn't stop Rylee. He led the team with 23 points, 8/11 (73%) from the floor. Watching the game, it was an obvious mismatch. Now, he may not have scored 40. But he should have touched the ball every possession. When Ashland started doubling him, kick it out for open 3's. Ruthsatz has a great system and is an excellent coach, but he messed that game up by failing to adjust.

No disrespect toward Rylee.  Great player.  I would like to have a kid just like him but Ashland does not double team anyone.  You guard your own man on that team.  You will see back side help, switch screens, and maybe trap at half court but no double teams.  They are good.

Thanks for that insight. If that is the case, then Rylee could have scored 40.

We will just agree to disagree.   Thanks for your insight as well.

Rylee is a very good player. No doubt about it. But Ashland played excellent defense on him, he had 8 eight total baskets. Four were in the flow of the offense and four were individual effort, hustle and athletic ability. He had 3 turnovers and was not doubled teamed. Ashland did an excellent job of keeping the Covington Catholic offense from flowing through Rylee.

You are making my point. Four baskets from the flow of the offense for the guy who the leading scorer in the game and shot over 70% from the floor.

We'll see you on a neutral court in Lexington.
