Well congradulations to the boys that made it for small school all area. We are so proud that these boys were recognized. I am going to be mean though if you noticed in my post about the Daily Independent i predicted that it would come on a paper that not everyone get or buys. What a surprise i was right. Thank you to all for supporting these boys and pushing for them to get some attention. If you noticed on the BGP all-state two from Russell and thats it. I am going to be happy in the fact that we know how good they were.

The "Independent" is, and has always been, an Ashland newspaper first and an area-based publication second.

 

It's no different than the Herald-Leader (for Lexington) and Courier Journal (for Louisville).

That is fine. I am from Ashland but that still doesnt mean that the right thing to do was put them all together. If you will notice the Sunday paper had it on front page that it was in the sports section but todays paper you wouldnt have known it unless you opened the sports up. Also online it has the big school and as of this morning no mention of the small ones. Sunday it announced the annual all area football team and never mentioned it was just large school. Come on you cant say thats right. We actually have family that work at the Independent and they totally agree. Its just not their dept. to do something about it. If the surrounding areas such as Boyd, Russell,Raceland, Greenup didnt buy the Independent they might not have such an easy time.

I looked at my quote and it should have stated that the right thing to do was when they announced this is this years annual all area teams to put both pictures and show them both in a big paper at the same time. That is not to much to ask.

Now that both teams have been selected(large and small)congradulations to all that made it. Has anyone heard about when and where the east versus west game will be played. Alot of boys on these teams play. Last year its was done at Fairview with Tackett coaching. Will it be the same of changed?

If the teams are voted by the coaches, blame the area coaches not the Independent...I'm not defending them but I know for a fact that if you send requests for voting from coaches to 16 coaches in our area/region, you are usually lucky if you get 8 ballots back...

 

I agree that the paper has traditionally been slanted toward Ashland but I don't feel that is necessarily the case anymore...It appears to me that they have been giving the most ink to the players/teams/students that are setting themselves ahead of the rest of the pack...I cannot complain about the coverage Russell sports, (football in particular) and academics have been getting for the last several years...Generally, if your teams/players are doing well they get the ink...

My comment toward the Independent was in regards to waiting until tuesday to put the small schools in while putting the large school in Sunday. I am proud of every one of those boys who made large school. I also know the votes for large and small school happened at the same time.

The game will rotate sites (stadiums) and coaches each year. It was a great experience for both coaches and players. I would like to see Coach McGlone, Hart, or Vanderhoof coach this year's team. However I have a feeling that several of our players could (or should) be playing in the Ky/Tenn. All-star game which would probably knock them out of the East/West game. I could easily see Clark and Wills from Russell on the Ky roster as well as Grizzle and Forrest from Raceland, McDavid from Ashland, Carter from Lawrence, and Tackett and Johnson from Johnson Central on the Ky all star team. It would give us more of a reason to travel down state or to Knoxville to watch this many boys play on the team. Usually we only get 1 or 2 players from this area on the team.

No way Eastern Ky. will have that many players on the team. When is the team picked?
