Pirates and Maroons set to cross swords in a battle of two of EKY's best

Records: Season opener for both teams

BGP Ranking: Belfry (#1 in 3A), Pulaski County (#7 in 5A)

Series History: Belfry leads 4-0 all-time

Table Setter: Following last year's three score loss to the Pirates, Pulaski County could safely assume they'd seen the last of Isaac Dixon. Then came the 'Supplemental School Year Program', allowing Belfry's star running back and Mr. Football contender an opportunity to reclassify, meaning the Maroons will get another crack at trying to corral Dixon after he gashed their defense a year ago for nearly two hundred yards. Preseason indications are that he'll be transitioning to quarterback this year, meaning he'll touch the ball on every snap. That's good news for Belfry, but for opposing defenses… not so much.

Quarterback is a position that has been vital to Pulaski County in recent years. Drew Polston has seen both his junior and sophomore seasons cut short due to injury, which in turn, drastically altered the Maroons' postseason fortunes. He's back and presumably healthy, with Barek Williams as his primary target. Williams was third in class 5A last year in receiving yards. Pulaski's offense will be further strengthened by the return of all five offensive linemen.

I think Pulaski playing Belfry this early in the season bodes well for them. I think this game ends up in the 40s with both teams offenses shining.

I can see this unfolding. Belfry's defense gave up some big plays in a scrimmage against Raceland. An experienced quarterback like Polston, who also has some mobility, could hurt the Pirates.

Pulaski's defense should be in good shape with several starters back. The new look Pirate offense with Dixon under center and - gasp! - possibly in the shotgun versus an experienced Maroons defense could be the deciding factor.

The outcome of this one early on will come down to who controls line of scrimmage. Belfry will have size advantage. Can Pulaski utilize smaller quicker D-Line to cause some issues. Should be a good game.

Pulaski receives opening KO and had some early success before getting slowed down by a holding call putting them way behind the sticks.

Isaac Dixon for 6 on the keeper. His legs did most of the damage on that drive.

7-0 Belfry

Belfry Ball at PC 45

2nd and 9, QB around the left end down to the 18of PC.

Dixon might just be that fast.

Pulaski scored as I was looking away, PAT to come.

Pulaski holds Belfry and has the ball on their own  47.

TD Pulaski on a 47 yard slant pass.

QB Drew Polston looks to be a problem so far.
