December 18, 200619 yr This is one of the most unfair suspensions ever. I can't recall one that was even close to being as harsh for a punch. A punch refered to as "an open handed slap." It wasn't just a punch. He was running around after the intial fight was over and broken up trying start up more. When things started to settle down and cool off he was still going. Combine that with the fact that he is a role model and he should not be acting that way.
December 18, 200619 yr It's 17% of the season. In baseball that would be 29 games. Football it would be 3. Chris Henry missed 3 games and the Bengals could have used him. What if Jeter was suspended 30 games if he charged the mound and clocked someone? Pedro threw 97 at someone's head, ran, and missed 3 starts top. 3 games out of 162. Do you still think 15 games is not a big deal? He makes 80 million over 5 years. Thats 410 games. 195k a game 195,000x15 is............A Lot of money to anyone. $2,926,829 Still not a big deal? Not a big deal? What are you talking about? You put up a bunch of weak punishments to justify another one? When you make 80 million in five years, you may not notice 2.9 million as much as I would.
December 18, 200619 yr Hey man, Melos a lover not a fighter.... Hit or in this case smack and run, no shame, no shame...
December 19, 200619 yr Someone needs to tell Isaiah he's coaching in the NBA, not 8th graders... Melo's a punk and a chicken... Just another reason to not like the Knicks...
December 19, 200619 yr For all of you guys calling Carmelo a chicken/coward/girl...would you like to fight him? I think the fact that he got in there for his teammate should remove any doubt of him being a coward. Also, I would like to hear some reasonable excuses for calling Carmelo a "thug" or "punk". You guys act like fights in professional sports are a new phenomena.

He pulled guys off and appeared to be breaking it up. This of course led to more ba things, but originally it looked like his intentions were good. It was just a punch and he was not doing anything any worse than a lot of other athletes I've seen in the past. When Shaq swung at Brad Miller and missed Miller wasn't even looking. Melo's was a sucker punch but not as bad as Shaq's.
December 19, 200619 yr Punch and run=chicken... I may get pummeled but I'm going down swinging. Not cheap shotting and running the other way. With the theory that most people seem to be using for calling Carmelo's punch a cheap shot...every punch would be a cheap shot. One last time, punches had already been thrown, Carmelo had already been grabbed around the throat...it was a hostile environment. Collins was blatantly talking noise and walking towards Carmelo. Do tell me how Carmelo throwing a punch under these circumstances is a cheap shot. I'm not nominating Carmelo for the good citizen award here, just defending him for doing what any of us would reasonably do in a situation like that.

When you make 80 million in five years, you may not notice 2.9 million as much as I would. 3 million dollars is a lot of money to anyone. Obviously more for me or you than Melo, but it's still 3 million dollar man. I do see your point, but no other sports leagues suspend like that. In hockey he wouldn't have missed a game, in football he would have been kicked out but not missed a game, in baseball he would have missed about the same amount of games, but they play twice as many. Him missing 15 games will not only hurt the Nuggets, but will hurt ticket sales in other cities (not much), can hurt Melo jersey sales, and will cost others more than 3 million dollars. 15 games is too many and if you can find a similiar suspension than maybe I'll agree, but IMO this is too harsh.

There were people between him and he swung around them then ran away. It doesn't get much more cheap.

Also, things were calming down. Carmelo swung when no one was expecting him to...chicken, IMO...

December 19, 200619 yr Agree to disagree. I'm no Carmelo fanatic and to be honest I didn't even know he was a leading scorer. But what he did does not warrant his being called a thug and a punk.
December 19, 200619 yr When a coach is calling out threats, I would of done the same thing after a foul like that.
December 19, 200619 yr I hadn't seen it until today but wow, Carmello is such a pansy. I lost a bunch of respect for him after seeing that.
