Coaches how do you keep your team up in a game you are sure you can't win?

I enjoy the underdog role myself smoke. Nothing better than beating someone that is supposed to be better than you! Have a good holiday.

Sorry, but I believe that there are game situations where the coach goes into it believing that its going to be a long night. You still coach to win, but both you and your players know that your in for a thrashing. Too many planets have to line up for you even to stand a chance. Too many things must go right for your team and wrong for the other team. Like I said, you coach to win and try to inspire your team that the game isn't lost before the final whistle blows.

I have seen a few of those nights up at HHS. They are no fun, you have to pick your battles in those games with your kids, it has to be something positive. As a coach I treat games like that as a scrimmage, Once no chance is left. I just coach up my guys, tell them what they do right, or wrong or how to correct things. Before the game you treat it like any other week and work the boys hard and make them believe in the game plan.

Thank you oldonetechnique. We have had alot of experience being the underdog. In the early going, the KY POST would pick us to lose about every game- didn't matter who we were playing!

Merry Christmas to you!

You calling them on it after the Lloyd playoff game is still one of the funniest moments I can remember...

I need to quit "calling" people on stuff. Doesn't do much for my popularity. ;)

Those were fun times. With Boone and Campbell on the schedule, hope our paths cross again.

Merry Christmas!

Your team will know if it is a huge underdog. If so, ask them if they think they can win one play. The answer is always yes. The next step is to win another play. The mental approach to winning as a big underdog is to say we are going to win one play at a time- which is really the approach regardless. Then, when you get to the 4th quarter and have a chance to win, the kids are excited and ready to go. They believe it will happen.

This approach has served us well. Mason County won 10 game from 1992 through 1995. Since that time, we have had much more success. Still seeking our ultimate goal- a state title. But, we are really proud of our young men and their ability to win as big underdogs, especially in the beginning.

Thanks coach it great to get an inside view on this.
