Powell 52 Estill 41

Pirates get the win in Irvine tonight. This puts the Pirates at 2-0 in the district. Congrats to Powell with the win.:dancingpa

This win puts Powell at the number 1 seed in the 56th right now, plus a three game winning streak. I guess Romans was the missing link to this team.

How did Berryman and Christopher do for Estill?

What kind of player is Romans??

He's Powell's center, about 6'2 or 6'3, and built on a large frame. He is very important to their team, and they struggled while he was out with an injury. The Pirates are a completely different team with him in the lineup.

Powell County has now won 4 in a row.

Kyle Lively and the players are beginning to understand each other.

Great win at a tough place to play for the Pirates.

What was wrong with him? I knew he was injured but never knew what type. Is it still affecting him?

I'm not sure about what type of injury he had, but seems like someone said it was an ankle or foot.

The matchup between him and Desmond Johnson of Cumberland should be interesting then.

Berryman had a very off night, Christopher was slowed by early fouls, particularily charges that hindered later attempts to penetrate. The point guard played hard in spite of missing some easy shots early. Estill shot a very low percentage from the field. Without Berryman and Christopher scoring 35+ points combined they wont win many.

Powell plays physical. Romans stats probably don't show his impact on this team. He just wears opponents down.

Could have been much closer if Powell hadn't got such a good run to open the second half. They pretty much dominated the third quarter.

Achilles atrain for Romans. He is an impact player because he plays so physical and emotionally he is hard nosed and focused. This game held true to what most of us have thought about Estill. If Berryman and Christopher don't get 30 to 40 then they lose by the difference in that number. Estill will still rebound and make a run at Powell and Lee in the District tourney.

Props to the pirates - who completely dominated the second half of a game which was tied at the half.

After a sloppy first half, which saw both teams taking far too many ill advised shots - and committing far too many fouls (especially in the game's first quarter) - The Pirates stormed out of the gate in the third 8 minutes - running off a 14-4 run that left the Engineers down by 10. The game ws mostly up and down in the fourth quarter - which saw both skilled drives and yet, more sloppyness alike.

The game worried me in it's aggressiveness. While I am always a fan of players giving it their all, I believe the refs let way too much pushing and shoving go on in the second half after being whistle happy in the first.

All aside, the Pirates played a well fought game and deserved the W. Romans was quite in the post statistically for much of the night despite having no worthy match up from Estill's trio of inexpirenced big men.

Powell's majority of offense came off too many open jumpers (given that good ball movement created these openings) and offensive rebounding which killed the Engineers down the stretch.

On the Estill side, Berryman showed a few signs of greatness but could not get the majority of shots to fall. I am sure a pure shooter like Berryman misses the inside presence of someone like Clinton Dixon who could share the weight of a defensive focus. Christopher shot the ball poorly - which may have changed the direction (or potentially - the outcome) of the game had he shot as well as normal. Cackling played well - especially late in the game. I am excited to see what kind of player he and fellow talented sophomore Chris Hoover may become over the next three years.

I was impressed by the hustle and will to win on both sides. The 56th is shaping up - and at the half way point - the Pirates look to be the standard.
