Cards hope to leave Maroons feeling blue

Young teams are appt to lose tight rivalry games, but Mayfield continued to defy its youth in Week 7, turning back a game Murray squad in a 21-20 overtime nail biter. Even in a rebuilding year, the Cards are finding a way to win. Their 25th straight victory over the Tigers means Mayfield (6-1, #4 in 2A) gets to stay at home for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Madisonville-North Hopkins (1-4) hasn't been as fortunate in navigating the challenges of being an inexperienced football team. And Covid has done them no favors, robbing the Maroons of three games this year. When they have gotten on the field, they've struggled, dropping three in a row heading into this matchup with Mayfield. MNH was blown out by Hopkinsville last week, 44-0.

This game was a spectacle last year, with both teams coming in highly ranked and featuring talent all over the field. Mayfield led by three scores at halftime before MNH erased that deficit in the third quarter alone. The Cardinals eventually held on for a 53-50 win, with both teams combining for over a thousand yards of offense.

This will not be very pretty.

Madisonville has only beaten Ballard Memorial.  Their best loss was the first game of the year against Christian County.  And they are coming off of a beatdown by Hopkinsville, which doesn't bode well for confidence.  Their best chance is that Mayfield has a hangover from last week's emotional win over Murray.  Not sure about Mayfield's health after that tough game either.  I think they are somewhat banged up and their best player (Galbreath) didn't play in that game.

Christian County is 1-3 and had lost 16+ games in a row before their Madisonville win.

Hopkins Central is 1-3 and had lost 25+ games in a row before their Madisonville win.

Looking at RPI, the highest rated team to date Madisonville has played this season is Hopkinsville, who beat them 44-0, then Calloway County who beat them 20-10.

May not go to well for the maroons Friday night.
