If I Were the KHSAA...

It has become apparent that scheduling district games is a complicated mess this season. With Covid cancellations, teams struggling to find dates to reschedule, and some teams seemingly wanting to avoid fellow district opponents, the situation is complex to say the least.

But here's how you could fix it:

1. Announce today that every team will make the playoffs.

2. District games would not be required to be rescheduled (this eliminates difficulty of canceling one game to schedule another).

3. District seeding would be determined by the RPI at the end of the October 30th games.

4. Any district with more than five teams would begin playoffs on November 6th. This would only be play-in games (4th place vs. 5th place; 3rd vs. 6th).

5. If you are involved in a play-in game, your November 6th regular season game would be canceled. However, teams that lose a November 6th game because their opponent is in the playoffs would have the opportunity to schedule a regular season game that night. Any teams already scheduled to play on November 6th and not involved in a postseason play-in game would of course be allowed to play their game.

6. All playoffs would begin the following week, November 13th. After the play-in round there would be four teams in each district and the standard bracket could be followed through the conclusion of the postseason.

This isn't the best plan and it isn't a long term solution. But for a year that has already been crazy and will only get more crazy as teams have more games canceled and more games rescheduled, it seems like a relatively easy solution.

Thoughts?

Makes sense. Some teams are manipulating the district schedules hoping to force the 1 win 1 loss result for district games that cannot be made up. It has been really quiet since the season began from KHSAA.

I also propose to go with sister districts for this year as well. Imagine teams having to reschedule district games for November 6th then having to turn around and play that same team the following Friday night.

Is the RPI a good way to go when so many teams have limited/incomplete schedules?

Absolutely not. But it’s probably the only way this season. I don’t like the idea of unplayed games being marked as 1-1, nor do I like teams obviously avoiding district games with superior opponents.

What will happen if a team comes dow with corona the first week of the playoffs? What if both teams come down with it the first week?

Very good question. Will be interesting to see how it gets handled. Hopefully that situation can be avoided but that’s not likely to be the case.
