NKU Students interested in Officiating Football

My advice to any new official....Learn the game...and the real world of officiating first...then learn the rule book. "No coach is ever impressed with your knowledge of obscure rules". Been there. Done that. Got the T shirt.

Who said anything about teaching "obscure knowledge of the rules."? The implication of your post is that the class could be a waste of time.

Isn't it nice how more often than not when someone has some kind of idea to try there's always someone with a shotgun to shoot it down?

I would suggest anyone who Coaches or is a League Director or is involved in Boosters at the Youth level take the class if possible. I'm pretty sure you would learn a lot about the rules and officiating in general. This would allow you to interact with players, parents, or even other coaches in a better way.

I just got into the class but I was told it might get cancelled. How many students do we need in the class.

I'm not sure of the magic number, but we are starting to pick up some registrations....So, let anyone who might be interested know.

Considering my book total for three classes this sester was around $450, I think I might be able to handle that.

Amazon.com, brotha'. My books weren't that expensive.

I'm looking at my classes to schedule for the fall and I was wondering if there would be a Officiating football class offered? If not i'm going to take the basketball one but I was curious.

I don't think I'd give the same advice myself. How can you officiate if you don't know the rules. I would say to learn the mechanics of officiating before you jump into the rules but you need to have some understanding of the rules to start officiating. Most importantly in learning mechanics first though.

Last name is Young

I'm pretty sure it's Matthew Young. Matthew Young is the president of the Northern Kentucky Officials Association and this year's winner of Official of the Year in football awarded by the KHSAA. I believe he officiated the 3A State Championship this past year at Papa John's Stadium. He and his association run an officials clinic every year at Simon Kenton (which I attended last year) and he's very capable of teaching a class on officiating.
