It's unfortunate that Bowling Green is again missing from their schedule. That was always a fun game to watch.

No truer words have been said Cat! I really miss that regular season game! So I have to go to either the JV or the Freshman game in Owensboro. They still play those thankfully.

 

For as good as Owensboro will be next season (and they will be really good!), this schedule "could" lead them to be pretty unprepared for the playoffs IMO. Truth be told, once Evansville Central left Frederica Street (in late August), the Red Devils weren't challenged until the last game of the season against Frederick Douglass (in late November - that's 3 months of not being challenged really - save a gritty effort by Henderson County)

 

I'm not blaming anyone, as I know their district has what I think is 5 district games (I think Breck County is also a district mate that the Red Devil Freshman Team could likely take out). And concerning district competition, likley only Graves County has any chance to make it a non-running clock game. Again just my opinion.

 

Then, the 3 local rivalry games (Apollo, OCath and Daviess County), which I support overall, as I think it's good for the community.

 

Henderson County is an OLD rival and Coach Boston has them on the rise, but they don't have the speed to hang with O (but still a good game IMO).

 

Now this season, you swope a chiseled Evansville Central (who barely clipped the Red Devils 10-8 last season at Rash Stadium), who lost to the 4A IN State Champion Evansville Memorial Tigers in the 3rd round of the playoffs after beating them in double OT in the Regular Season, for an OK 3A Gipson Southern squad.

 

If I could make 2 moves with this schedule, I would do 2 things:

1. Make sure you are playing the better Evansville teams in that IN game slot. You can play with any of those teams and they will challenge you and ultimately help you.

2. While I'm a big fan of playing your local rivals, BG for example stopped playing Warren East a long time ago because it wasn't good for BG or Warren East. While I'm not willing to go that far here, I am willing to say that you should only play 2 of the 3 local rivals in a season. You pick, make it a round robin with all 4 teams. Whatever! But just play 2.

With that extra game, play a team that will challenge you (BG or South Warren or Franklin Simpson, etc.). But I really think O is ready to schedule a team from Louisville. I would like to see them play T or X, but start with smaller mountain to climb and schedule Manual or Ballard. Both very good teams that will test you too! Would that pay off in the playoff? More than all the district games combined!

Sad thing is their district is very weak for a 5A District. They will not be challenged. I do believe that all the City Schools, OCath, Apollo, and Daviess County should be pretty good next year and could give OHS a game if they are not ready. But even then, OHS has far more superior athletes and in Year 2 of Gavin Wimsatt.

 

Don't sleep on the Gibson Southern game. Gibson Southern will have a Junior QB who is garnering a lot of Power 5 offers/attention and they have been very good the past few years.

 

This team should have some pretty high expectations and based on this schedule should come in one of the higher RPI teams and walk again to the semi-finals.

I know it's a mute point this year, but I don't think you'll see the Owensboro area schools or Henderson County playing Evansville schools any time soon in the near future.  They might play someone like Gibson Southern, Mt. Vernon Posey, North Posey, Boonville, etc., but they won't play any Evansville schools, which is a shame b/c it's typically good out-of-state competition for those schools.  The Evansville area schools now play in a 10-team conference with the recent addition of Vincennes Lincoln and Jasper so their entire regular season schedule is now nothing but conference games.  They might have a preseason scrimmage against them, but not a regular season game.
