Oldham County 67 Beechwood 54

The 8th region refs called a very lopsided game. Almost hard to watch.

Oldhams defense is awesome to watch. Can’t wait for the game tomorrow vs Scott County.

Problem with 8th refs is that there are only 10-12 really good refs. 6 of them were prob at all A boys/girls finals. 3-4 of them ref other regions. Then add any other big Friday night 8th Region games like Collins/Spencer and Shelby/Anderson. I think 1 of the 3 refs were top 20 refs if your lucky. I guess it wasn’t bias but just bad. Also with the intensity Oldham brings all the little fouls will get over looked. No matter what Oldham is way better than Beecheood.

Certainly not lopsided in terms of total fouls called as the two teams had almost the identical number of fouls called on them. Oldham didn't even shoot a FT until there was a little over 6 minutes left in the game.

Not saying that this was a well-called game. I saw a lot of fouls that were not called tonight - I believe the pace of the game allowed fouls to be missed on both sides - but did not see a "lopsided" game at all.

The Tigers struggle to find an offensive rhythm. Oldham County was patient, passing and moving the ball multiple times...waiting for the open shot. Beechwood....not so patient...oftentimes forcing shots and turning the ball over.

Oldham really boosted by a super first half on offense, hitting over 60% of their shots, including 9 of 13 threes (69%). Tyler Slone (17 first half points) and Deaton Oak (14) were dominant, with Oak hitting four threes in a row in the second period.

Beechwood outscored Oldham, 27-26, in the second half, but never could quite overcome the 14 point halftime deficit. The Tigers cut it to 6 on two occasions, and actually had the ball once, down 6, but Downtown missed a three that could have cut it to three. They never really threatened to get any closer after that.

UNOFFICIALLY, Oldham battled the taller Tigers to a standstill on the glass, at 29-29.

Kudos to senior backup guard Nick Carter, who was key to Oldham's success with his third quarter play. When Beechwood made their run, Carter hit 3 of 5 shots in the third when OC was briefly struggling, including a layup on an offensive putback at the buzzer to end the period.

Oldham was always ending the period on a motivating note; the Colonels scored at the buzzer to end the first, second, and third periods.

The Tigers like an uptempo game, but this game appeared to be too fast for a team that was playing its third game of the week; the Tigers were clearly gassed in the fourth period, and it showed in their shooting. Beechwood was having trouble even hitting the rim in the fourth, when they made only about 15% of their shots, and even struggled to hit layups.

Oldham exacerbated Beechwood's fatigue by playing 9 players extensive minutes; Beechwood also played 9, but only 7 saw significant time.

Really impressed by one of the youngest Tigers to play. Mitchell Rylee, the big 6'5" sophomore, showed a lot of potential in this game - and he still has two years ahead of him.

Beechwood's key for success for the rest of this season is getting better connected as a team. They haven't found the right flow and identity as a team yet.

What was the reason the kid left the team earlier in the season about, seems like they lost their way about that time.

He only played one game. Definitely a loss. He could make things happen, was a competitor and good shooter. But there was speculation even last year that he wouldn't play at all this year, mainly for his own personal reasons. He didn't play basketball his sophomore year either so it wasn't a shock to anyone when he left. Disappointing but not surprising at all. That hurt the depth but there is a strong group there without him. I think part of the reason he left was because there were 3 other good guards getting playing time and all three of them are still there.

They did lose the two games right after he left but I don't think that is the issue. The guys that are there need to get better connected and focus on taking good shots on every possession. It will help every player on the floor if they work the offense for better looks. Here is why I say this.

Most people probably think Beechwood is a good shooting team. They aren't this year. In fact, they are below average. They are shooting 42.6% overall, 31.2% on 3's and only 63% on free throws. Those numbers are what a team with a losing record shoots. Compare those numbers with the other top teams in the 9th region and Beechwood ranks 10th in FG%, 8th on 3's and 10th from the free throw line. It is actually surprising their record is 10-6 shooting that poorly. Almost every player that played significant minutes last year is shooting worse this year.

How do you fix that with a group of players that are all shooting worse than in previous years? The stats from previous years show they are better shooters than this year's stats. They need better team work and execution on offense. That is why I say they need to get better connected, better flow, just execute better on offense. Make the extra pass for the better shot. Have patience and work.

Beechwood needs more than one player shooting the ball 40% of the time.

Beechwood is missing a kid to set solid picks like they had last year. Makes a difference when the defense can close out on the shooters quicker.
