A CovCath vs Highlands Regional Final at the Bank would certainly make for an entertaining atmosphere!

I will take that! It will just show how far this program has come. I remember when Listerman first came here it was a Victory for the Birds to hit 40 points in a game as a team. That’s no lie!

Yeah and our football teams won more games than the basketball teams. OMG, are we becoming a "basketball school".

Can a Bluebird fan break down for us the Highlands rosters since Listerman arrived with number of basketball only players in the top 8 players? In light of comments in this thread, I would like to see facts about basketball only players and players who also play football or other sports too.

In a quick review of this year's rosters it looks like there are perhaps 3 of the top 8 that play football. Is that different than previous years?

I would state that 5 or more of the top 8 in the previous 4 classes were football kids. If you look at a very good JV squad this year almost entirely made of basketball only kids. Add that LUKE and Sam are juniors and do not play football.

Also, there are 2 very talented freshman, Will Herald and Coby Kramer, who are both basketball only. Future is bright.

So this team is significantly better than previous years because there are 2 more basketball only players in the top 8?

This team is significantly better because of the hard work by the kids and staff. It also doesn’t hurt that you have 2 basketball only kids who flat out can score and live in a gym, either court or workouts.

Don’t get me wrong, teams in the past have worked hard, but having multiple basketball only kids in each class has not been a thing in the past. The program is finally seeing results.

Those familiar with Highlands sports can see the parallels between the basketball improvement and the baseball program. Basketball program isn’t anywhere near where the baseball program is, but very comparable.

Last year 3 of the top players were basketball only and the best player on the team was a "football" player. What I am pointing out is high school kids do not have to be one sport athletes. If they choose that and it works for them, fine. But it isn't necessary to have success.

I don’t disagree at all. Kids should not have to choose a sport or be pressured by coaches to select only one. It also aggravates me when you hear stories about kids being told to choose out of fear of losing their position.

However, if you look at highly successful programs, they have players who focus only on basketball, just facts.

Agree.

Do you think it is possible to have a highly successful team with no basketball only players?

Highlands won 20 games last year with key players being "football" players.

Agree.

Define successful. .500 or better, sure. Qualify for regional tournament, perhaps, challenge for a region/state title.....no.

Has it happened, yes. In my experience, you need those basketball only guys who maintain and improve their skill and basketball IQ, the only way to do that is to play and touch a basketball almost daily. You have 2-3 of those, then sprinkle in the strength and athleticism of the football players, that’s when you have something. This years Highlands team is a perfect example.
