List Your Final Class AA Top 5 for 2006

Recommended Posts

1. Russell ( I think Russell was the better team on Dec 1st, I think most of Mercer deep down agrees)

2. Mercer ( Demolished everyone in their path except Russell)

3. Belfry ( Very solid all around team)

4. Corbin ( Gave Russell all they could take at home, very good young team)

5. Owensboro Cath ( they definately made improvement)

You are WAY wrong.

I don't know of any Mercer fan who would agree with that statement. Mecer was the better team on Dec 1st. The score board showed it. The difference is Mercer was able to get it done in all three areas - Offense, defense and special teams. Russell is a very good football team that is very well coached, they were pretty even defensively, they were pretty even offensively, but special teams were the difference. Mercer was better.

Mercer may have been the better team on Dec 1 but I'm not sure they would have been every other day.

Bottom line Mercer 0 turnnovers Russell 5 turnovers. That is the difference in the game. Mercer's special teams weren not much better. The 2pt conversion was a great play on a bobbled snap by the holder. The made XP was as ugly a make as you will ever see. Russell missed the first XP into the wind when the kicker pulled it left and then came up just inches short of the goal line due to a great play by Lewis on the 2pt conversion.

It was a game between two very good very evenly matched teams.

IMO Russell had the better more balanced team and the wind hurt them more so than Mercer. But Mercer took better care of the football and won the game.

IMO the wind hurt both teams pretty bad. It's just that the two coaches chose to approach it differently.

It seemed as if Coach McGlone did not want to become one dimensional and tried to do things thay had been doing throughout the playoffs. Unfortunately for him, Mercer has a great group of LBs and DBs (30 ints on the year), and were able to put just enough pressure on the QB.

Coach Jaggers on the other hand, seemed to mainly be concerned with not turning the ball over, eating clock, and playing for field position. He felt that the elements and his defense could win it for him, and chose to run a one dimentional offense. And unfortunately for him, Russell had the right personell and the right defense to stop it.

I think we got to see the best effort that any group of kids could possibly give, both teams worked their butts off. And while it was a great football game, (because of the weather) I don't think we got to see either team's best game. Unfortunately we never will.

I'm not sure if either team is more balanced than the other. I think this game was more of a pick your poison and two very good coaches chose a different poison.

Thats a fair evaluation.

Russell However controlled the clock (28:16-19:44 TOP). They just had too many turnovers to overcome.

Russell really did what they wanted to do except hold onto the ball and stick it in the endzone. Mercer Co's defense did have a little to do with that though

I agree with Fletch. Let it go. You are giving the rest of us a bad name.

I totally agree. Had Russell won he would be talking about how overrated they were and how good Russell is, but since the loss came on the Devils end, it was just an extreme mismatch and unfair.

1. Mercer County - Won the 2A title fair and square.

2. Russell - Close but no cigar

3. Belfry - Solid ball club, had a great year. May is a hoss.

4. Western

5. Middlesboro

These were all solid team but too bad only won can win it all. Congrats to all these teams. All are class act programs and have nothing to be ashamed of. Good luck next season.

New system should really shake things up,

Yoter

Yoter 00 i really dont see how u can say Mercer won it fair and square... they are twice the size of Russell with twice the kids to choose from... i dont care what any person thinks or says Russell had the state title stole from them because the KHSAA was asleep at the switch.... they should have told Mercer you can go ahead and consolidate but since you such a ungodly advantage over every team in 2A that you won't qualify for the playoffs... Mercer is lucky the Devils gave the game to them!! Russell was the best team in 2A no doubt about it... Mercer is about 5 in 3A

Is Merser the state champ? Yes. They can thank KHSAA for that not Russell, or any other team they played. When you combine two varsity football teams into one, and the KHSAA allows it to happen everyone else looses. They turned thier backs on all the other teams in 2-A. I still find it hard to believe that the KHSAA approved it to happen. I can tell you one thing there is no accountability in KHSAA. In most organizations if you were to turn your head like KHSSA did in this situation you would be looking for another job.

Combine Belfry and Prestonsburg and what do you have? State Champion. Combine Russell and Raceland and what do you have? State champion. I just find it nauseating that so many Mercer fans are proud of what happened at the expense of all the players in 2-A. That sickens me.

I don't think some of you realize how small Harrodsburg school was! From what I hear If they had not merged Harrodsburg might not have been able to dress a football team! You make Russell sound like a school that can only win against 2A and 1A schools! Danville is 1 A and beat two 3A schools this year!

Just because you combine two schools doesnt hand you a state championship! Thats insane!:sssh: I sure what sickens you doesn't represent to majority of the people from Russell!

I really enjoy going into a game as some would say, without a chance. The Mighty Mercer Titans. As I have always said, "The best team will win." No excusses, no cry babies, and no the refs were bad.

Good luck to both teams. I will be there cheering for the Devils.

Seems to be a sharp contrast between these two.

As a Russell fan I think Mercer did have an advantage. You can say Harrodsburg was small and barely had enough for a football team. But then you look at what Mercer got from those limited numbers. Alot of speed and with alot of Varsity experience. That sure didn't hurt.

As for the state championship. It was a tough game between two evenly matched teams that could have gone either way with a different break here or there. It was very entertaining although not very satisfying from the Russell point of view.

Do I agree with the KHSAA's decision? No I don't. Do I understand it? Yes I do. Do I feel like Russell got robbed. Maybe, but they had every opportunity to win that game and none of it would have mattered. Mercer won under the circumstances that were given and they earned the AA state title.
