Is Douglass the progam the state has been clamoring for?

Featured Replies

As our host Coach "We winning we riding" Truck likes to say #85broncos is Fredrick Douglass the progam the state has been begging for? A strong Dominant program fron the Lexington public school system. Lexington has always been known for having Athletes but outside of a Lafayette 2 year run has really never been relevant in the upper classes. There's been plenty of ideas why ie lack of support, funding, coaching etc. Does a strong program in Lexington boost the whole state profile?

It definitely doesn’t hurt, I know that much. FCPS football has been a black eye for Central Kentucky football for some time now, outside of the 2 years Lafayette made it to the state finals. There is no reason that football in the second biggest city in the state should be this bad overall. It is refreshing to have at least one public school in Lexington that can compete with teams outside of the city limits. I really hope FD makes noise in the playoffs so they can earn more respect around the state.

Not sure the state, but certainly Lexington area may have wanted a dominant program, especially to try and compete against Louisville teams and that team from the North, also known as Scott County.

Douglass should be good for the foreseeable future. Their freshman team is very good and they have around 50 freshman on the rooster.

This has been met with a mixed bag of reactions in Lexington. Several of the Lexington public schools were decimated by departures from their program to the new school (Frederick Douglass). Henry Clay, Bryan Station, and Dunbar were hard hit and LCA even suffered losses especially the first year. The old adage "Build it and they will come" rings true. A new school is very attractive and they have put together an excellent program and has made a Lexington public school relevant again. It goes both ways as they lost a big time player Dekel Crowdus to IMG Academy and I'm sure with their talent will be targeted more in the future.

The next step is to prove it in the playoffs and they seem to have the team this year with a dominating defense to prove it. They made a big statement earlier with a dominating victory but never count out the Cardinals. Also, Covington Catholic looms large in their path to Class 5A domination. They are deep and talented and are definitely a threat and I'm sure they are eager to prove themselves up to the task.

Weve heard the "Douglass decimated the orher city schools" argument but how successful have those programs been?

Something else we have heard is. With the state Championships being played at Kroger field a annual representative from Lexington would be huge for khsaa and everyone involved. Will or can the other public schools rise to the challenge, will the new Great Crossings program surpass the other Lexington schools this is something else that bears keeping an eye on. #BigThings

The program the State has been clamoring for is a public school in 6A that can compete with and beat the very beat Jefferson County has to offer.

To be fair, that is not FD.

FD has to count their lucky stars that a realignment loophole put them in 5A and not 6A.

How was it a alignment loophole? Their first year they played 6A with just over 800. Last year when alignment took place they had just under 1100 which would not have put them in 6A. It just sounded like you were inferring Douglass did something to avoid 6A. If you did not mean that I apologize.

Nah Douglass did nothing wrong... they are playing the hand they are dealt and benefiting from it.

Just stating that if the alignment came 2 to 4 years later they probably would be in 6A with the rest of the Fayette County Schools, but it proved to be advantageous that the alignment ended up being where it was to give them a chance to win a Title.

Mercer County's Title back in the early 2000's was an example of a school exploiting a situation to their benefit, FD did not do the same thing.

This is the first year they’ve had to benefit from being in 5A they will probably as you said move to 6A in 4 years. But I don’t see how they didn’t take advantage of it in their first two years. Last they and Scott Co. we’re very evenly matched if Douglass had not lost to Scott Co. by one point I don’t think they were good enough to beat Male or would they or Cov. Cath this year either.

Fayette County football has been dismal for several years. The records for Lexington public schools the last three years up to today (October 15th) are: Frederick Douglass (28-5), Tates Creek (17-13), Henry Clay (12-19), Dunbar (6-21), Lafayette (6-24), and Bryan Station (5-24). Tates Creek did go 9-3 in 2017 but no other team has finished above .500 since then. This years record to date excluding Douglass are 10-26.

What happened too football in Fayette County over the last 20 years? Probably several factors but in 1999 Bryan Station (13-2), Henry Clay (10-2), Tates Creek (11-3), Dunbar ((7-5), and Lafayette (2-8) combined for a 43-18 record and this year so far they have combined for 10 victories. Most if not all have either new or refurbished facilities so that is not a factor.
