Tigers’ Mercer intercepts Ezell and returns it to the LC 9. 1:07 in second. Hopkinsville 14-6.

Penalty on the return puts the ball all the way back to the Hopkinsville 49 but Tigers retain possession.

Updates much appreciated. This has the makings of a good one.

Half ends with an apparent officiating snafu. Hopkinsville has it 3rd and long at their own 37 with about 30 seconds left in the half. They took a knee to run out the clock as Logan had no more timeouts. However there was a flag thrown as it appeared the right guard committed a false start. The flag was waved off. It should have then been 4th down but the down marker was not changed. Hopkinsville has to snap it again to run out the clock and since the clock stopped with the whistle, the play clock only reset to 25 with about 28 seconds left. Hopkinsville snapped it quickly and knelt down, obviously thinking it was still 3rd down. The officials ran out the clock and Logan County’s coach was livid. He came out to protest but to no avail. Looked like the Cougars should have taken over on downs at the Hopkinsville 33 with about 20 seconds left. If the flag was waved off I think the game clock should have just restarted and ended the half before the fourth down snap but there was a breakdown in communication somewhere.

Neither team has generated much on the ground. Each team has had one good drive mostly by throwing the ball. Special teams mistakes by Logan County and turnovers are the difference so far. Two very evenly matched teams here. It seems like Hopkinsville made some good defensive adjustments after Logan’s first drive as the Cougars haven’t done much offensively since then. Their biggest plays have been called back on penalties. Jay Bland with two key tough runs in the red zone on both Tiger scoring drives.
