Mercer's Defense

Featured Replies

I doubt it will be a problem. I know the d-coordinator really well and he knows the wing-t inside and out. I think Russell will have a hard time running the ball so much so that they will have to resort to their passing game. JMO, so Russell guys don't get all bent out of shape. Go Mercer Beat Russell :flame:

You are kidding , this D Coord must have come from Harrodsburg ... Devils ran thru Scotties like a sieve last year .... 34 - 6 before Devils lineman got tired ...

Devils come out winging it ..... can also play some power football and balance both with the pass ... bring some lunch ... :fire: :flame:

Get your panties out of a wad. This guy isn't from Harrodsburg. All Wing-T teams he has faced, he has shut down. He has a huge depth of knowledge about the offense and his D will be well prepared. Sorry Reddevil your year was in 05 not 06. You like apples?

If he was Mercer's defensive coordinator last year I know of one time he didn't shut it down.

Mercer has two new D coordinators.

That being said, it's not the Wing T. It's Russells wing T, which what I saw last year is run to absolute perfection.

Man this is going to be a great game!!

He wasn't at Mercer Co. Yes Dirt.....it's the wing-t. Not Russells.

Actually Coach McGlone's version of the wing-t is a bit different. Its definitely not the Deleware version of the wing-t.

That is all we heard last year. The wing-t is so easy to defend. Well, if it is executed correctly it is not. If you take away one thing there are always other options.

I've always loved to watch good wing-t teams run it. You are right, executed well it is like the wishbone, a beautiful thing to behold. I remember my freshman year at EKU when Delaware came into town and ran it well but they turned the ball over too much. Those turnovers were the only salvation for the Colonels that day. When you run it for as long as Russell has you can bet every kid knows what's expected on each play.

BTW, what does Russell do differently than Delaware did?

Just a guess - but I would say..............uh EXECUTE!

I want to say the formation is a little different then a Deleware Wing T. Russe's version is more of a power football version then most wing t teams. It looks like a lot more downhill blocking then what you would think. Last year Russel honestly ran about 4 plays..over and over. The ran QB trap and I think a buck play. Then would line up in Power I left and just slam the ball down OC's throat.

Thanks for the more indepth response than the other reply.

Most good coaches adapt a philosophy to what their talent is more suited for. I remember when Finley was at Russell County. Most years he ran a wishbone that wasn't much more than a glorified T formation with all the power they ran out of it. You adapt the offense to what you can do with your talent.

barrel is on the right track. The terminology is a little different as well. It is a more power based offense then the Delaware version.

Sorry if that ones not in depth enough for you.

It takes discipline to stop the wing-T. Its hard to try to stop the wing with just athletic ability. Wing teams are not looking for the big play, therefor, they are content with the 3 and four yard gains. If the 'backers are getting bad reads, or the d-line is running upfield creating running lanes, then Russell's wing and ball control could be a test for the Titans D.
