State 4 A Final

H, you do not know your history very well as trinity had to play X every year as another district game. This did not change until the plaoff format change in the late eighties. Most of our titles came during the time frame of which I am referring to. Also as a side note Bobby Redman was at Ballard from the mid seventies until the late eighties then he went to Waggner and continued having dominate teams only losing to the Rocks. During this time peroid we were also playing Boone County which as I recall was a pretty good team. I stated to look at the history. As a side note our 83 title came by going through X twice once regular seson as a disttrict game and the second in the old City title game. We also had to play Male during that playoff run a 3-0 win. The West may have been on the up swing in the last few years but not historically.

I'm looking at the history as I type this and Trinity hasn't played X in the playoffs prior to the Final since 1986. They haven't had to play St X and Male in the playoffs since 1986. That is a span of twenty years and eight championships. I think I know my history well enough to recognize that having a path that puts at most one of the other two Big 3 members in your path is preferable to having both of the other teams in your way.

Not having Male or X on their side of the bracket is a significant factor in the Rocks' post-season success. They are still an extremely well-coached team with fantastic fan support and great tradition, but you can't cruise when you play X or Male like you can when you play a typical playoff team from NKy or Lexington. If you accept the idea that there is a Big 3 and that X, T, and H are far and away the best 4A schools year in/year out (the win/loss shows this overwhelmingly and I think most people agree), you have to agree that your probability of losing a game in the playoffs will be higher if you have to play two of the Big 3 to win it all than if you just have to play one. Simple probability multiplication. I would have loved it if the new 6A playoff format had X and T on the same side of semistate and Male on the other, but alas the Rocks continue to get this subtle gift of favorable playoff bracketing in their favor.

Well, that argument would makes sense except for one thing. Trinity has done better than X and H put together. Since 2000, Male has one title and X has one. Trinity has four and is working on five. In the 90's you could argue that what you say is true, but in this decade X and Male together have not had the success of Trinity.

H, I will concede the point of the Big three that you are making present day.

Once again, how many times since 2000 have the Rocks had both Male and X in their playoff path? Having to play and beat both teams in the playoffs reduces your chances of winning the whole thing.

You are right, it does reduce the chance of either X or H winning individually. But one of them has to win a head to head match-up between the two. Playing each other does not reduce their COMBINED probability.

Of course it is only one year but Ryle's wins over Meade and Hendo speak volumes about 4A football in that part of the state this year.

I would agree but I don't think you will find many from the West that thought 4A in the west was real strong this year.

Yes, Ryle pounded Meade and Henderson this year but isn't this the best NKY team since 94 Boone? NO ONE and I will repeat NO ONE thought Henderson would make it to the semi state. I knew nothing about Meade except they didn't fair to well against Owensboro earlier in the year. WKY 4A was with out a doubt down this year so I don't think one season makes NKY football the class of 4A outside of Louisville.

X is still X and I'm surprised someone would post about them being down. We played them twice and barely won in the first meeting. They missed an extra point. Who did the Rocks play leading up to the Male game?

Trinity played Southern and Ballard leading up to the Male game. Male played PRP and X leading up to the Trinity game.

It was no secret that X had some things going on...those are fixed and they'll will be very tough to deal with next season

AAHHH!!! The eternal argument begins again. All hypotheticals and ifs/buts,etc, etc. I do like that everyone can point at the R2D4 again and say, "it wasn't that tough." There are few teams that could play that schedule year in and year out without a possible bump or scare time to time.

Yes, Manual was "scrappy"(?) and PRP proved to be a bit overhyped (after the fact). That still is a VERY tough chore playing St.X, PRP, Manual then St. X.........AGAIN in consecutive weeks.

I was shocked that Meade made it to the Ryle game but evident;y alot of John HArdin fans were not. I was told that John HArdin could not pass the ball (QB was hurt earlier) and that MEade would be a tough game for them. Was also shocked that Warren Central did not advance another round. The West was a bit down this season but that is an exception and not the rule.

This is an incorrect statement. A main reason to why no NKY 4A team had been able to make it to the state final the past couple of years it the fact that the NKY 4A district had been aligned to play the district with Trinity, Ballard, and Shelby Co. until just recently. Dixie and Boone Co. have had some pretty good 4A teams in the NKY the last couple of years, but getting past Trinity in the first three rounds was quite a tall task most of those years. In fact, there was only one time a NKY team beat Trinity in the playoffs and that was Dixie in 2004.

The argument of Trinity having an advantage in the playoff draw is silly. Sorry H, but to be the best, you have to beat the best. Just because St.X and Male are in the same district is not an excuse as to why neither the Tigers or Dawgs get it done. For a long period of time in the 80's, it was Trinity's district that was tougher, being they had Ballard (Redman as coach) and Waggener (Redman as coach), but oddly enough, we still won 5 titles in the 80's. You play who's in front of you and you beat them. Just because X and Males district is stronger, is NOT an excuse for why they cant win. Playing better teams makes you better, right? :sssh:

What part of what I said was incorrect? Don't give the song and dance about having to beat Trinity every year. The last time I checked the winner of Region 1 would have to beat Male or X.

As far as the West teams go, I think most people have felt the west was harder to get through because of Male, St X, Manual, etc...That is still the case...The actual west teams(rgn 1) that is, have alot of balance but not in the league with the above mentioned teams...Henderson, for the most part of the year, was behind Warren Central, Owensboro, Christian Co and possibly even Graves and Marshall, but, they played there way to the final 4 and the others didn't, so, you have to give them credit...as far as Meade goes, I know nothing at all about them except that that district was weak overall anyway and its not uncommon for the LVille district to sweep that district year in and year out....So, imo, and we all have one, Ryle's wins over these 2 doesn't speak volumes to me at all...
