Is there anyone pro-BCS (anti-playoff)?

Featured Replies

A playoff will never happen and let me tell you why:

Fed-Ex

Nokia

Tostitos

GMAC

Alamo

Capital One

Just to name a few. It's all about the $$$$$$. The NCAA makes so much off bowl season there is no reason to change it.

Who said anything about changing it? Keep the bowls. Just change who plays and why. The still get their money, and if each game has title implications, even more interest would be paid and that would mean more money. Right now, only 1 bowl has anything to do with the title. Why not have 7?

Same exact reason why classes in KY basketball will never happen until some legislature gets involved and rules that some team is being hampered or left out because of it.

Like fastpitch softball started in KY and steroid issue in baseball.

I have a suggestion for you. Start a thread that names the 8 teams that you would invite to the playoffs and watch the posts gather on how you are cheating someone for leaving them out.

Here is a start? You going to invite 3 teams out of your 8 from the Big Ten? Which of the 3 Big East schools you inviting and which two are staying out home? Or maybe you don't invite any of them? How many SEC teams get invited? Texas the only big 12 school?

Scroll up and read Jumper_dad's proposed system. I have no problem whatsoever with it. I wouldn't take 3 teams from the Big 10. Are you serious? Have you looked at it? OSU would get in, along with Michigan as an at large bid. As for the Big East, it depends on the outcome of the Rutgers/WV game as to who gets in. If Rutgers wins, WV would have a tough case due to 2 loses. The same goes for Florida if they loose to Arkansas. USC would be the only Pac 10 team. The winner of the Big 12 championship would be the only team from there.

My teams would be:

Ohio St

USC

Florida/Arkansas winner

Nebraska/Texas winner

Big East Champ

ACC Champ

2 at large from: Michigan (already entitled a spot), any team in the top 8 BCS standings that isn't a confernce champ.

Aside from this, you missed the point. I was simply saying the season isn't a playoff. If it was, you couldn't have multiple teams being undefeated and claiming that everything turned out ok.

And a playoff doesn't guarantee that the best team in the nation is the national champion. The college football system is closer to naming the best team in the nation as the national champion than college basketball.

Or are you willing to say that Villanova was better than Gtown, even though Gtown had beaten them 2 or 3 times before that championship game?

Question is do you want a tournament or do you want a national championship that is TRULY the best team in the country?

No way does Nokia spend millions for a Sugar bowl played mid December as a quarter finial game. Nor does Fed-Ex, GMAC or anybody else.

So you want to eliminate playoffs and tournaments completely in every sport? That's what it appears you're saying. You just want to give OSU the title right now and not make them play anybody for it? Are you saying that the teams ranked 2-8 are not capable of beating OSU? If they are, then how can you justify them setting at home on Jan 8 watching a OSU/UM rematch? USC, Florida, WV, Louisville, Arkansas all could probably give OSU a tough time and maybe win. If that's the case, how can you say that this system gives the TRUE national champion?

If OSU really is the best team, then they would survive a playoff.

So they would rather have a meaningless Wake Forest/BC vs Rutgers game that has no implications at all, unless you're for those teams.

(I just used them as an example. Rutgers probably won't get a BCS game now.)

And besides, Nokia isn't the sponsor for the Sugar Bowl anymore. It's Allstate.

Absolutely NOT TRUE. Gtown was the best team over Villanova and they DID NOT survive the playoffs.

I don't believe in a rematch. UM had their chance and only because of OSU's unforced mistakes was the game as close as it was.

UL, Rutgers had their shot and couldn't close the deal. Florida and Arkansas, the loser of the SEC title game wouldn't deserve a shot. The winner might. USC beats ND, they do. Not sure ND does. Boise State might.

The question I see now is which team deserves the opportunity (that hasn't already truly had it) to take that #1 spot.

At least we agree that UM doesn't deserve another chance. Rutgers was never going to make it to the title game. Even if they won out, it wouldn't happen. Boise St shouldn't even be in the conversation. They're like these teams in basketball like Florida Atlantic that goes 25-3 and win their conference and get in. They get blasted by 30 their first game. ND doesn't deserve it, even if they beat USC by 20. But USC is going to win, so it doesn't matter. I have a good friend that is as big an OSU fan as I've ever seen. He HATES the BCS system. He wants to either see 4 or 5 unbeatens or, like this year, several 1 loss teams making an argument, because he thinks there should be a playoff too. He has no problem with it, because he's confident enough in OSU that they would survive.

Your BCS bowls would still get the big games....Final Four and such.

I would like a compromise of 8 teams

Champs from

SEC

Big 10/11

Big 12

Pac 10

Big East

ACC

and two at large teams could be from these conf. or other deserving team

Play championship game week before Superbowl

Keep the rest of the bowl games, kinda like NIT for football. This would still let the rest of the teams a good payday. JMO

Best idea for a college playoff system I have seen. You need to give the NCAA a call.

HOLY CRAP!!!! Eagle'01 agreed with me??? :scared:

A system could be worked out to keep the bowls and use the BCS rankings to determine the top 4-8 teams for a national championship tournament. I think it is badly needed. The only NCAA sport without a tourney!

Thank you. That's what I've said for years. I did a speech in college on this topic in 2002. I too said to keep the bowls and BCS rankings. It's a broken record year after year after year after year after year......the BCS always has complaints and I think there's an easy fix. But it'll be a long time until 2018, when they finally decide to do it.
