On back to back days on Feb 1 and Feb 2, Scott Co beat Henry Clay and Walton Verona by a combined 45 points. That would've been without Moreno. That tells me more then the unexpected loss to Dunbar, and a district final loss in a rematch to Henry Clay.

 

Don't know much about Scott Co. I have heard they are guard oriented other then Moreno. CovCath will try to pound the ball inside. If Scott Co can deny the post and make the CovCath guards beat them, it will be a long night for the Colonels. CovCaths guards are small and don't respond well to pressure. However if they beat the pressure it often turns into easy buckets/dunks for the bigs. I would think CovCath's bigs will have a hard time keeping the Scott Co guards in front of them on the defensive side. This should lead to lots of help, so Scott Co will have to kick it and make open shots.

I have seen Scott County about five or six times this season and have not seen Covington Catholic at all.

 

Michael Moreno is not at 100%, but he is playing through his limitations.

 

One statement made on this thread makes me think Covington Catholic might have a difficult time in this game, even with Scott County star Moreno NOT being full strength....."Covington Catholic guards are small and don't respond well to pressure". If the Cov Cath guards can't handle the pressure it will be a long game for the Colonels. Scott County CAN turn up the heat.

Cov Cath's point guard Disken is solid. Good ballhandler and their best outside shooter. The others are iffy. Cov Cath's front line is big, very athletic and skilled - 4 deep.

Agreed on Disken. Really nice player, however his size can get him in trouble in trap situations. The others are shaky ball handlers at best.

 

As for the bigs: Are they really that skilled? 2 of them don’t look at the basket unless they are 4 feet in. Thelen is skilled in transition but if he doesn’t catch it in transition or deep in the post to use his size, he has a tough time scoring. Mayer has skills to go with the bulk. They are all super athletic though!

Moser nor Jackson start, not sure why that is! I cant figure that one out. However, one nice game vs Beechwood is hardly hitting their stride. Moser had a few other decent games but all in all, the 2 guard in Park Hills is definitely a weakness.

Now that he is back the Colonels are going with a big lineup to start the game, but Moser gets into action very early and often.

Also, I think that the Colonels go with the big lineup early to overwhelm their opponent from the get go, and a couple of those bigs aren't too shabby with their ball control either, so early on it's very effective for them to go with the bigs and dominate themselves to an early lead.

In his short time back I've seen Davin nail a couple of 3's, so other than the presence of his height he might add another outside shooting option.

 

I'm not the coach so I've no influence over Moser starting or not, but starting isn't always such a big deal if within a couple short minutes into the game you're called to action.

 

I'm guessing their philosophy at present is to overwhelm their opponent right off the bat with height. Not really a bad idea considering the Colonels, guards or not are highly effective with ball rotation and offensive sets. They do it better than any team in the 9th, and probably most of the teams in the state.

 

Again there's no shame in a team having so many quality players that some can't start, but are used effectively when needed.

 

That narrative all season is that the Colonels lack in the guard department, but I just don't see this as an issue anymore. Players are capable of improving as the season progressives, and from what I've witnessed for the Colonels their guard play has. It's helped to win them a very competitive 9th Region this year, so I have to think they're doing something right.

 

 

A good coach, and Ruthsatz has without doubt proved himself as such will make proper adjustments as the need arrives, and I'm sure that he'll utilize his players the best way he sees fit to increase their chances of winning.

As much as I would like CovCath to bring the title back to NKy, got to go with the Cards. CC is not as good as their 2018 team and Scott County is better than their 2018 version.
