The only opportunity I had to participate in Thanksgiving practice was in '97 when I was a junior and we won 3A. Coach Ray and staff treated it the same as they would treat any other Thursday practice.

 

It actually wasn't until I joined BGP that I found out that any teams actually made a special occasion out of Thanksgiving practice.

 

Yeah, I found out about this today. It sounds really cool to have a celebration with the day off and get to have time with your family.

 

But I think keeping the course and just keep doing your thing is the way to go. No reason to distract a bunch of kids and change up the system the day before playing a team that also made it to the semis.

South Warren has done it 4 of the last 5 years. They invite former players to come out and watch and spend time with them on the morning before practice. Kind of a special thing that Smith has instilled at South.

So I can see keeping the exact same practice time and routine from there. But no reason cant also start a tradition for players before the practice, because it's not like it changes anything. Because usually they would be in school anyways.

You're right, it makes total sense. It's actually an obvious thing to do that is really cool. Probably doesn't make any difference to the kids with school already being out.

 

I can also see some coaches just having to stick to exact same schedule. I would be like that too, it has a level of superstitious to it.

I think if you do it every year, it’s not all that special. I,m excited for the teams that this is a rarity for. They need to be excited and realize what a privilege it is to be practicing today. There are a lot of kids out there that would gladly take their place.

That is one of the more absurd takes you'll see on BGP. As if the kids/programs that do it regularly don't understand the privilege they EARNED. Maybe the reason they do it so often is because they do understand what it means to be there?

I was lucky enough to be involved with two Thanksgiving day practices. It is awesome knowing you're one of the final four schools left in your class. Has a certain "awe" feeling to it.

By definition if you do something all the time it’s not special. My point was that this is routine to several programs and it is expected and not special. Walton Verona should be super excited this year it is special for them. Trinity for example is here I’m sure just about every year. They earned their spot in the semifinals by beating a very average Ballard team twice. To me that’s not very “special”. Absurd or not, that’s my opinion. No knock to the great teams that do this each and every year, but it’s not special for them if they expect to be practicing each year.

I think if you asked any program that does it very often, they would strongly disagree with you that it's not special. Expected or not, those programs know what it means to be there, which is exactly why they are there so often.

 

We celebrate the holidays every year with our families... Does that mean those occasions aren't special?
