Not to open a can of worms, but being frustrated with a loss and leaving the court with 5 seconds to play is not nearly as bad as refusing to go in the game if I'm not the "guy" on the play. One is frustration out of being competitive, one is a whiny, selfish baby.

 

Just my opinion.

 

Both are selfish, although I do agree that there is a big difference between the two acts.

 

When you're on the court (or field), you play hard. If you don't want to play, take yourself out, but do it at the appropriate time. I understand frustration with the best of them, but when you're supposed to be a team leader and a star, this is unacceptable.

 

I don't think Jordan ever did this, nor would he ever do that; however, the times have changed and I'd imagine this won't affect LBJ's image at all (right or wrong).

A bad move by a frustrated player who has been carrying the Cavs all year.... outside of Hughes.. they need someone else to step up.

Scottie Pippen had one selfish moment in his career and people still label him a selfish player.

 

That is a COMPLETELY different act. Refusing to go in at the end of a playoff game when the game is hanging in the balance is enough to have him labeled as selfish. That was an all-timer.

If I'm Scottie Pippen I want the ball there too, and I'm irrate if I don't get it. Not selfishness, but if you are the best player then you should have the opportunity to make those plays. After playing in Jordan's shadow it was time for Pippen to shine and he was not given that opportunity.

People want to think the rest of the team needs to "step up", the rest of the team stuck around until the final buzzer. People want to say LeBron is learning what life is like with Cleveland, prior to Mike the Bulls were worse, I never saw him walk off the floor before the game ended.

Kukoc was at the top of his game, Pippen was going to get a LOT of attention, and Toni made the shot. Scottie was not as good as he thought he was....period.

So LBJ can walk off the court because he doesn't have X amount of kids with X amount of women? Or because he hasn't been accused of smoking weed? Or because he hasn't pulled a gun on somebody?

 

I'm not buying that logic. Is that really what we've come to expect not only in the NBA, but in society as a whole? If so, that's sad, IMO.

And people are saying the Pippen comparision isn't fair, but it was in that article. He walked out and didn't finish. That's no class plain and simple. I don't think Kobe's competitive drive would allow him to do this. With Pippen his competitive nature took over and people deemed it as selfish. As far as who would you want to play with (not talent wise), but yes. Pippen should have gotten the shot, had I been on his team I would have understood that. Pippen didn't want to quit on his team, he wanted to win it for them.
