What are the side judge's responsibilities over the chain crew in games today? Is the side judge supposed to be the person who puts the clip on the chain?

In a perfect scenario, one of the chain guys clips the chains. But, you have to know that he/she knows what they are doing in order to delegate that responsibility. Otherwise, it's the linesman's job to clip. If the linesman is the one clipping, more often than not it would only be clipped in the event of a measurement.

This was not the only controversy in this game.

I used to tell players - play like you need 11 yards and they only need 9. When they retort - "that's not fair" and "that would never happen" I would just say "because I have seen it and life is never 'fair'".

 

I have seen the chains shorted for the home team by about a 1/3 or so of a yard - yes, intentionally. But to shorten for the opposing team to then lengthen on forth seems odd since you not sure what will happen. Or maybe they only do it every play and 'stretch it on only on the close plays. If you did it while walking out for a measurement no one would notice.

The officials are in charge of the chain crew and the chain is clipped every play. Some crews use two clips and the first is removed only when the new one is clipped after a first down. Officials go over exactly where to clip before the game. Most want it clipped on the backside of the yard line you are marking but every now and then some want it in the middle of the stripe. The chain poles themselves get moved all the time by coaches, players running off the field and even a kink but that rarely happens. JV and Freshman ball and middle school ball I can see where it would be easy to manipulate those things to a degree but a high school game is all on the clip as to measurements and close call. The poles are there for approximation.

If the referee on the sideline clipped the chain then it doesn't matter what the chain crew did yanking the chain forward unless they didn't measure. is that what happened? Did they not do a measurement because when the ref looked to the sideline it seemed clear that they were short of the chain where the guy placed it?

It seems like that may be part of it, it was clearly short so it didn't get measured. Also Oneida fans claim the clip was moved also...so who knows.

It would be pretty clear on video if the chains moved, and I feel even more obvious if someone moved the clip. That's quite a claim to make.

I agree, you'd think there would be video possibly. If it wasn't caught on video it's not likely the refs would catch it live. They are focused on the field and the play, it would be easy to move the clip while refs are watching the play.
