Mercer Co. vs Newport thoughts and predictions...

Featured Replies

I'm trying to fogure out how Newport is supposed to control drives and eat up the clock against a team that has given up about 70 rushing yards per game. The defense that held Newport to 6 points has only gotten better.

Also, I know Newport has a pretty good defense, but I'm trying to figure out how Newport is going to hold Mercer to 14 points. Mercer's offense that scored 27 points is much better than what Newport saw 6 weeks ago.

They were able to run the ball in the last meeting actually, they just couldnt punch it in when they got in the red zone.

I don't know what the stats were, but I don't remember Newport gaining a bunch yards - rushing or passing. I'm not sure they had 200 total yards. Maybe someone has the stats and can look it up.

I also, don't remember Newport spending much time in the redzone. The lone touchdown came on a play of about 30 yards, thanks to a drive extending penalty by Mercer, otherwise Newport wouldn't have even scored. The only other time I remember them being close to the redzone was at the start of the second half when Mercer turned the ball over, and then held Newport out of the endzone, and I'm not sure if they were actually in the redzone.

Do you mean the missed interference penalty in the endzone drive?

They marched right down the field the first drive of the game and then coughed it up. They had a few more opportunities to score also. What game were you at?

It sounds like the best way to attack Mercer's defense is by running it straight at them.

Nope, that wont get it done. They are very good against the run.

There was no interference penalty.

I was at the game that Mercer won 27-6 and gained twice as many yards as Newport.

From the mercertitans.com website

Mercer Total Rushing Yards: 4498

Opponents Total Rushing Yards Allowed: 866

Many of the 866 came against the Mercer JV.

I know the statistics and I know Mercer has great speed on defense. But have they really faced a good power running offense all year? A team that will line up and just run it right down your throat?

Boyle Co and Newport the best two teams that Mercer has faced and neither of them are smash mouth running teams that just keep pounding at a defense. Stats don't always tell the whole story.

There was no interference penalty.

Because the ref totally blew that call. Right in front of his face and he eats the flag. That was pretty pitiful.

The only thing I can say is, almost everybody Mercer played has tried to run it. No one has been very successful. I don't know if we're that good or not. I do know that Boyle put alot more yards and points on Danville and Lafayette than they did Mercer. Is that a valid comparison? I'm not sure.

Great defensive play.

Great defensive play.

Only if you call hitting the receiver in the air before the ball gets there a great defensive play.

I believe Mercer wins this game, but putting them straight in the state championship as most Mercer fans are doing seems a little premature. They've only played three teams with winning records and their opponents record is 38-58. I think they'll be meeting a little stiffer competition in the next several weeks.
