Cov Cath's Jadon Stava is an athlete. I was surprised to see how little they went to him on offense. I think he produced yards on every play he handled the ball except one.

 

Rob Sandfoss and Nick Darpel are two more really solid players.

 

Conner Peak is a really nice ball carrier, but will have to work at improving his arm. His receivers were waiting on the ball more often than not, and he threw several "rainbows".

 

Myers is a really good kicker for a freshman. He appeared to have more leg than I've seen thus far out of Trey Gronotte but needs to work on field goal accuracy. Both attempts were pulled left by about 5 feet. Definitely promising.

Highlands linemen Rayven Hogle and Kaleb Kissee are great. On defense they were all over the place on the field, and combined to go in on probably 1/3 or more if the tackles for the Birds' D.

Foster Schuett was impressive to watch. Nice hands, and he runs really hard, but runs straight into the defender half of the time. That's the youth of being a freshman player for you though...nothing that can't be coached out of him. He was generally running into defenders on bang-bang plays. He needs to learn to take that split second to get a little more of a field view and THEN make his move. I think Foster is going to develop into a nice weapon for the Bluebirds.

Richter was a strong 2-way player for Highlands, but I think he'll end up being a defensive workhorse as an upperclassman.

 

Gausepohl, Welch, and Welsch were also really good.

 

Surrey has a strong arm and puts some real zip on his passes, but his accuracy needs work. He threw into double and triple coverage several times as well.

Cov Cath's line didn't look too shabby. They had some issues from time to time on blitzes, and there were occasional breakdowns, but that's the nature of freshman ball. Highlands did a good job reading formations and deciding to bring everyone. I saw that at least 5 times, and Cov Cath had no answer for it.

 

They struggled on the red zone in the second half. Most gains were on big plays. They had some issues on shotgun snaps...about 50/50 center issues and quarterback issues.

 

Cov Cath tried to run Peak around the outside a LOT in the game. They usually had good blocks by the O-line, but then the blocking they needed from RBs and WRs often didn't go well.

The schedule I was given by the Cov Cath stats crew only had this season's schedule and results on it. Freddy Colonels are at 5-0 with wins over St. Xavier (OH), Cooper, Campbell County, Simon Kenton, and now Highlands.

I didn't have time to take note of too many linemen on the Highlands side of things...it was the first freshman game I've been able to make in several years, so I was trying to pay attention to the up-and-comers on the Cov Cath side of things.

 

As I said up in post #3, though, Hogle and Kissee looked very good on the Highlands defensive line.
