Interesting numbers regarding public and private splitting

Featured Replies

Who's fault is that?

Can public school children not play on the local Catholic school team? I played soccer at St. Agnes (CovCath feeder), and we had kids on our team from Beechwood Grade School and another local public school.

I'm with you on this!

I think one of the reasons public schools are so far behind in some of the "lesser sports" is because of the excellent programs in Catholic grade schools.

When you get to the "major" sports, the only place I see a wide discrepancy is AAAA football.

The one caveat is Lex Cath for girls basketball, but you don't see Sacred Heart, Mercy, Assumption or Presentation dominating so I think it's an isolated instance.

You know that a lot of public schools don't like those private like or independent schools like Highlands. If the privates are out of the picture, you know who's next.:D

Actually we just like beating whoever we play... Public schools or non-public schools. It does not matter to me.:D

Assumption goes beyond dominance - they are in a "golden era". Does this bother anyone? I expect that winning 13 of the last 15 state championships does upset the publics. How do the publics explain their dominance? Is Assumption next for the KHSAA to legislate against because they can? In the end if your a Catholic school fan - what's not to like? Enjoy it girls, you earned it. G0 Rockets.

You are probably correct. I am sure that is why a school like Lloyd supported Prop 20 because as a A or AA school they were overly concerned with Trinity and X winning too many AAAA championships.

T and X has to get over themselves and realize that the world of KHSAA and HS football DOES NOT revolve around them. AAAA probably does. But that would be it.

I personally don't care one way or the other whether T or X ever wins another football championship. Never even knew they dominated as they did before Prop 20 came about and so many posters on here began assuming that we all cared only about them.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Bubble bursted!!! You are right in that Lloyd does not care about how many 4A championships T and X win. I guess their arguement is they are concerned about schools like St. Henry and CovCath drawing from their talent base. I might be wrong but is this where their arguement for seperation comes from?

I would say you are right. They care about St. Henry and CovCath much, much more than T or X.

If I were a student and looking between Lloyd, St. Henry and Cov Cath, it would be simple for me.

If the kids in your school are so bad that you have to cancel homecoming year after year, I don't want to go there, simple.

Do you agree though that this isssue is not about T and X alone? That Lloyd probably cares very little to none about T and X.

Agreed, Lloyd has there own fish to fry up here in NKY. Iis it an issue of kids in the Lloyd feeder school system leaving to go St. Henry or CovCath? I have heard rumors that even Boone County has courted some of there athletes in the past.

"Drawing" students towards a private school rather than a public school is simple - reputation.

No disrespect for Lloyd, I know many fine people to have come out of there, including my favorite grade school teacher, and one of my best friends mom, but the reputation is poor.

At sporting events, nuetral fans consistantly come away with the feeling that Lloyd students are disrespectful and set a bad example. Cancelling homecoming does not speak well either.

I'd say it's not about drawing kids from other feeders... but rather public schools repelling their students and pushing them to other schools through poor reputations.

Everyone was really uptight about splitting up private and public just under a year ago, and I just now found the time to look up a few numbers that make me say "Why would public schools ever want to split?"

Basketball

Championships

Public - 83

Private - 5

Teams in the finals

Public - 165

Private - 11

24 straight, and 31 out of 32 finals from 1968 to 1999 involved 2 public school teams. No final has ever featured 2 private schools.

The 1992 Final was LexCath and UHA. UHA won the state title at Freedom Hall on a night when Christian Laettner buried UK in OT

You are right, I missed that game in my research.

So that makes it:

Teams in the finals -

Public - 164

Private - 12

And LexCath is still the only private in recent history to make the finals.

Chalk it up for 42 of the last 43 for the publics.

How many "difference maker" athletes have left the Lloyd system, and gone to CovCath, or even St. Henry for that matter in the last ten years, especially in the major sports?? From what I know Lloyd has more of a problem getting their athletes "out of the halls and onto the fields/courts" than anything else.
