November 5, 200619 yr Actually, Assumption dominates volleyball, not Sacred Heart. Sorry, I mix the two up sometimes.
November 6, 200619 yr Author Thank you on the urban/rural comment. Crossbar on your basketball comments Basketball Championships Public - 83 Private - 5 Teams in the finals Public - 165 Private - 11 24 straight, and 31 out of 32 finals from 1968 to 1999 involved 2 public school teams. No final has ever featured 2 private schools. I will assume that you, for some reason, felt the need to not include girls basketball in your comments? If you did, than these are inaccurate as Sacred Heart and Lex Cath met, I believe in back to back years in 03 and 04 (or somewhere around there). Also, I think privates have won 6 out of the last 7 girls state titles. Girl's basketball only confirms my arguement. Public - 35 Private - 8 The total was 34-2 in 2000, and since then 6 out of 7 have been private. Note that only 3 privates have won (Mercy, Sacred Heart, and LexCath). As I said before, it is the recent success of private schools that have publics worried.

That was the position of the publics from the very beginning. The trend over the last 10 years or so. Somewhere there is a thread in this forum that lists the titles over the last 10 years and they are as tilted in the privates favor as your stats are tilted in the publics favor.
November 6, 200619 yr Two public schools won the soccer championships Saturday night for what its worth.

So because the private schools have made themselves better and the public schools have not, lets eliminate the competition from those who have made themselves better because we can't (or won't) keep up. Is that a fair assessment?

Is that a fair assessment? It would be if you look at bettering one's athletic teams as compiling all-star teams as Lex Cath's girls basketball teams have done this past several years.

I gave the overall stats which are heavily in favor of the publics, but at the end of my first post, I talked about the trend of the last decade or so.
November 7, 200619 yr Two public schools won the soccer championships Saturday night for what its worth. You know that a lot of public schools don't like those private like or independent schools like Highlands. If the privates are out of the picture, you know who's next.
November 7, 200619 yr Womens Volleyball? Private School dominance - Assumption, Sacred Heart, Mercy and Presentation all have one thing in common - every girl almost without exception plays year round. That explains how they win within KY. They also win consistently at a National level against girls that have year round commitments? Assumption was National Champion last year and #2 in the Nation this year. The other schools are nationally ranked year in and out. Talented and year around play. Commitment to the sport. Most matches for the above aren't against in state teams during the regular season, other than themselves, because of the lack of competition. If you want to beat the above teams commit to play year round. Not only do they play year round, but their players began playing in 3rd grade, while at Catholic grade schools. It's hard to compete against that with players who begin playing at the high school level with minimal to moderate experience.

November 7, 200619 yr I really think the issue stems to football and the 4A dominance of Trinity and X over the years. If you look a the numbers, the publics are well represented in championship column in just about every sport except volleyball and swimming.

It's hard to compete against that with players who begin playing at the high school level with minimal to moderate experience. Who's fault is that? Can public school children not play on the local Catholic school team? I played soccer at St. Agnes (CovCath feeder), and we had kids on our team from Beechwood Grade School and another local public school.

If you look a the numbers, the publics are well represented in championship column in just about every sport except volleyball and swimming. You are probably correct. I am sure that is why a school like Lloyd supported Prop 20 because as a A or AA school they were overly concerned with Trinity and X winning too many AAAA championships. T and X has to get over themselves and realize that the world of KHSAA and HS football DOES NOT revolve around them. AAAA probably does. But that would be it. I personally don't care one way or the other whether T or X ever wins another football championship. Never even knew they dominated as they did before Prop 20 came about and so many posters on here began assuming that we all cared only about them. Sorry to burst your bubble.
