What Coach in 1A is the most underrated?

Featured Replies

Craig Foley hands down!!! Frankfort normally starts the season with at most 30-35 kids, finishes the season with around 14-18 kids. Like what @Bac2369 , having to battle with Beechwood & Mayfield to even see a chance at any team from the east.

Geographically, Frankfort has 3 high school (Franklin co. & Western Hills) both larger schools. Its Tough being an Independent school and not having a large district like the other two school in town and, Foley has gotten it done. Frankfort won the district for a whole decade under Foley. with little to less then any 1A school. IMO

I am going with our coach, Mike Salmons. Raceland is a small Independent school with no industry to support the tax base, 62% of households in the district are retired and or disabled and have had less than 5 D1 football athletes in the past 20 years yet we are consistently in the top 5 of 1A schools. Coach Salmons has 2 regional titles and a finals appearance in his 4 years as head coach. So, when speaking of getting the most out of your kids, Coach has to be considered in this topic.

Agreed. Not to mention he has surrounded himself with a top-notch staff.

The reality is, some of the guys with the worst programs in 1a may be some of the best coaches. Most 1a coaches get more out of each kid they coach than the coaches at larger schools that just move on to the next kid if one isn't cutting it.

I don’t want this to sound like I’m cracking on FHS, because I have a lot of respect for the school and its historic accomplishments, and having been friends with folks tied to the school for 20+years I am familiar with a lot of its struggles as far as losing athletes to transfers.

I didn’t count more than 7-8 reserves on the sidelines v. TNHS on Friday. Those guys were warriors out there dealing with that soupy weather and the TNHS front line, which was short on depth after losing two multi-year starters in the preseason, but still bigger and deeper.

I can't remember his name at the moment but i think it's Chirico? Or something like that . He's the HC at Paintsville. Talking about taking over mess of a program and has completely turned it around . I'm a Fairview guy so I'm not a fan at all of Paintsville, but this man has my respect .

I would give Campbellsville’s Dale Estes a mention here. He guided the Eagles to the state semifinals and has them poised to repeat.
