Was Tom Herman the anonymous tipster in Zach Smith Case?

Texas Coach Tom Herman, a former Ohio State assistant coach, tipped sports reporter Brett McMurphy to details of the Zach Smith-Courtney Carano Smith relationship that led to Smith’s firing, Urban Meyer’s paid-administrative leave and the investigation that has currently engulfed the Buckeyes’ program, several sources told me.

Furthermore, Tom and wife Michelle Herman encouraged Courtney Smith to go public with her claims that her ex-husband had physically abused her, sources say.

“They wanted Zach Smith fired,” one source said. “They had some dirt on him and wanted him off of Ohio State’s staff.”

The Hermans have even helped pay for Courtney Smith’s legal fees, two of my sources told me.

Tom Herman’s motive?

Herman was furious after five-star receiver Garrett Wilson committed to Ohio State in April over Texas, sources say. Wilson played at Austin (Texas) Lake Travis High, just miles from the Longhorns’ campus. Zach Smith was the Buckeyes’ primary recruiter in getting Wilson’s commitment.

Given that Texas is one of the most pressure-packed and highest-profile jobs in the country, and following a 7-6 season in his first year as Texas coach, Herman needs to secure a recruiting base close to home to turn the Longhorns around. And there were no bigger stars in his own city than Wilson.”

Certainly a really interesting development in this case. Much more in the article that I didn’t quote in this post. This doesn’t prove guilt or innocence in anyway for Urban or Zach, but it certainly is an interesting development and a huge chunk of the overall puzzle.

Also if you all take a look through Jeff’s Facebook posts, there is a quote from Courtney Smiths Mom corroborating Zach’s story and not Courtney’s. Also doesn’t prove anything, but it’s definitely evident that this case is not cut and dry in any way and that those who assumed guilt or innocence after the initial report were wrong for doing so without all of the details.

What story would that be? The one where he admitted to choking her twice? That’s all the evidence I needed. Not sure why that gets over looked.

Basically her mom said that she believes anything Zach did was in self defense or trying to remove himself from the situation. Again I’m not proclaiming anything, but the fact that it’s HER mom saying this should at least make people think.

Zach is going to have trouble explaining the”I know” response text when his wife said he pinned her to the wall.

Tom Herman , if this story is true, is a total loser. He didn’t do anything until he lost a recruit? High character guy.

According to the Courtney’s mother, Zach was acting in self defense.

Odd response to the text.

That’s why he’s been losing recruits because they see through his garbage. I was one of Herman’s biggest fans and he was a huge reason for OSUs NC. They wouldn’t have won it without him, but this is next level loser stuff. Let’s assume for the sake of the argument Zach is guilty of everything he’s been accused of, wouldn’t think basically self incriminate Herman? Why wait until now? It’s not like Wilson was the first recruit in Texas he lost to Meyer and OSU.

Again he admitted to choking her twice and apologized.

I agree, but other factors could be in play that would give more context to the story. We still don’t know.

Which again is said to have been in self defense according to Courtney’s Mom. I’m doing my best to stay impartial because we all know where my loyalties lie with regards to this whole case, but at the very least it proves that we all should have waited until we had more facts.

Didn’t mean to threadjack my own thread, but my intent was to keep this thread about Tom Herman.

Do we know that he and his wife hadn't been encouraging Courtney Smith to come forward for a while?

Maybe he thought outing Smith to a reporter would be the best way to get Courtney Smith's story out there.

If, as Grant said, he's lost other recruits to OSU, then that makes losing a recruit now look more like a coincidence than the reason for his tip.
