Natural Grass or Sports Turf

Featured Replies

I know I for one think turf creats for faster speeds, and less injuries...

A 40 time on artificial turf will be slower than natural grass b/c of the softness. That's why your track times are better than grass. The harder the surface, the less time your foot stays planted on the ground. Although natural surfaces provide less traction (typically) than turf, it creates less torque on your knees and ankles. :thumb:

I would guess last night is the perfect argument for turf. I'd love to know how much money will be spent to repair the damage on natural grass around the state...

In one particular school district, a gentleman was going to donate money to a high school and get a synthetic grass field. The school board told him that if he gave it to that school he would have to do it for two other schools. Now my question is, Why would the school board do that? He wants to help his alma matter. I don't understand why a school board would tell him that he would have to do it at two other schools. But I agree that synthetic grass is the way to go. I loved playing on synthetic.

To be honest, this is getting a bit tiresome.

Shaun was going to donate LESS than the cost of the turf. Who would that leave to pick up the remaining considerable portion? The school board. The school board is not going to do it as they represent the ENTIRE school district and have other concerns than an unnecessary field.

As a taxpayer, I fully support the school board.

Sports Turf is the ideal surface....it has all the benefits of grass, and none of the negatives....

I haven't read all the comments but most of them and I can testify to some of the concerns since our school has FieldTurf. Cost was offset by private donations and fund raising(which is still is progress after 3 yrs) in a round about way. Weather conditions, what weather conditions, the field turf is great. Who ever posted about speed and softness and injuries, you must have played on the $50,000 field and not the $500,000 field. The field turf makes for speed and as long as the field is properly maintained it will not get soft nor hard. Injuries, IMO, it has not been used long enough for studies to be done to say one way or the other. I, personally, have not seen an increase in any type of injury over the last 3 yrs. If anything, there has been a decrease in the ACL injury occurring.

ladiesbballcoach, keep teaching hunny!! Our kids did not suffer any by putting in a Field Turf facility. They still get the proper books and new computers. If anything, the whole community benefited w/our facility as it also has an all purpose track around it for all the old, out of shape citizens to use so they get their tax money worth. Also, the field is used ALL yr rnd for recess w/the elementary/high school PE and not to mention our baseball/softball teams can get outside on a field to get ready for their season much earlier than most(not before the deadline though).

If you can afford it, get it!!

Sorry, had to quote this one. Being that I know the young man in question pretty well I have to chime in. I don't know where you got your info but it is incorrect. The whole sum for one field was going to be donated for Boone Co H.S. to have field turf. If you have noticed in the last several yrs, all three BCHS have had a face lift on the football fields w/stands. If it is done for one it has to be done for all! Conner just had a major face lift w/the new gym facility now Boone will finally get a much deserving new gym. So, it wasn't that the school board had to put up any money for the Boone field it was they would have to get it put in at Ryle and Conner.

I understand and accept the donations issue. But those same donations sure would buy a lot of computers for the district. Sure would buy a lot of winter coats for kids who show up without any. Sure would buy a lot of pair of shoes for the kids (like the HSer I had yesterday who wore their fathers gym shoes in that were 4 sizes too big) that don't have any. Sure would buy, well you get the point....

I am a coach that sure likes the new things but some of the new things are just plain luxuries that we don't need while there are other populations in the building going without.

And let me add, if it was an adult going without, I would view this differently because they could go out find a job and get what they need. But I am talking about the 8-year-old or the 11-year-old or the 15-year-old. (And before someone starts on the 15-year-old in getting a job, in a rural county there is not public transportation to take them to and from a job after school or in the summer.)

Nobody in our buildings are going without...we like to take academics first, then the athletics..ik would assume that most in the Commonwealth would do the same.

It will be interesting to see how well some of the top turf teams handle mud if there is a repeat of Friday's weather deep into the playoff sched. My gut says teams who play home games on grass and in the mud adjust to turf better than turf teams deal with the elements.

If you're saying you know Sean and he says he was going to cover the entire cost for BC, I'll defer to you. That's not what was reported.

I know Shaun and his brother pretty well, and I was told he was willing to donate a set number, and it wasn't the full cost. We've been over this a million times...

I do know SHAUN and know for a fact it would not have been done 1/2way or 3/4 of the way but all or none.

Everybody knows everybody and I realize anyone and everyone can say I know whoever but in all honesty, I do know the entire family very well.

Reported, you should know not to believe anything you read in the newspaper or hear on the news.

I do know SHAWN

I'm sure you mean Shaun...

I corrected myself but thanks anyway. I should have proof read before I submitted. I hate reading threads w/so many errors in spelling.

I can say that I have met Shaun a couple of times at work, but I do know his Mother rather well, and I will agree with 3pt shooter, he wouldn't have done it any other way. BTW his Mom is one great Lady, and I don't know anyone who has meet her, who doesn't like or respect her. She is indeed a wonderful woman, even before her son became the great football player he is.....
