Colonels_Wear_Blue
I don't know of any big-box stores that offer sharpening services at all...and if they do, I'd be willing to bet that they're just sending them out to have them sharpened elsewhere, in which case they're just putting their own mark-up on whatever their outside source charges. Most smaller hardware stores (like Crescent Springs Hardware in northern Kentucky) charge a pretty reasonable price for sharpening lawnmower blades and chainsaw chains. When it comes to sharpening my lawnmower blade, I have an angle grinder and a bench grinder both, but I find the easiest way to do it is generally just a single-mill hand file. TAC
I think Home Depot about 6 years ago If they don't offer a free service what makes you think others will? I pay to have mine done at True value. Don't remember the cost but they sharpen and balance them.
PP1
I have no skills with tools. I can't even hang a picture. I took my old mower to a place called Godby's about 10 years ago, just wondering if anyone did it for free.

I've tried it myself and never seem to get the angle I want on the blade or the balance. I used a bench grinder.
All Blue
I purchased a second set of blades for mine so that about half way through the summer I can switch them out and then when I get the mower serviced in the winter I have them sharpen both sets. rjs4470
I doubt any store would sharpen blades for free. When I was running a group of Ace stores, we used to sharpen blades for $7 or $8/blade...that was over 10 years ago though, so the cost has likely gone up. Sharpening your blades is really a do it yourself thing. Just for this job, a cheap bench grinder would pay for itself in a season or two. Just be careful not to go too sharp, as your blades will dull and become unusable quickly, and make sure they are in balance before using. You can get a cheap, balancer from Amazon for under $10. As someone mentioned, it's a good idea to pick up an extra blade so you've always got a sharp one ready to go.
TTS_JF
I just picked up a new set yesterday to put on my mower this week. I think the cost was around $30 for them, at $7-$8 dollars to sharpen your not really saving much. I've not used a grinder on mine, but might try that with the old set I pull of this week. akw4572
I took mine to Ace a few weeks ago in Hebron. They charged me $7 a blade.
