Somerset vs. Harlan

Featured Replies

:D I just don't think Somerset is 13 points better than Middlesboro and surely don't think their D is as good as Middlesboro. I just love the "stomp the life out" line. I promise you the hardest hits will be by the green team, win or lose. Ask your campers. No one has "wore down" the Harlan D. If the Dragons lose it will not be by being "ran over". ;)

Pappy you are right this will be a good game and Somerset will not run over Harlan, the Dragon D is pretty good...Deaton and Cole are very good, the best QB and WR I have seen this year...Cole has another gear that you have not seen from any player this year...I see this game being close but Somerset winning...I sure wish I could be there Friday....

Have you seen Cole play yet this year? The kid is unreal this season. M'boro comes at you running, but this kid is already in afterburner when he catches the ball. You won't have the time to really get physical with them. I know what the Dragons did to us, and I know that they gave up over 200 rushing yards to Roskoph, who is comparable to Cole (speed wise). I also know what the Jumpers did to the Campers, the Jackets, the Skins, et al. NOW it's the Dragons turn. There is no running over you. Their receivers are fast, not just Cole. They'll run enough to keep you honest, but, believe me or not, until you've seen them in action, WOW! I know that the Dragons are confident and rightfully so, but unless they have really found some speed in the secondary, lightning is getting ready to strike. The biggest point I'm trying to make is that the Dragon D won't get wore down by physical play, it will get winded from chasing the ball here, there and yonder. The speed is there on D, also. It's hard to break away from them. I'm telling you, you've not seen this yet this year. They will score on you faster than the M'boro Jackets did, and if you make any mistakes, you'll pay. If you get down by 10, you won't get back in the game. Best of luck to you, but you will be right here with the rest of us in the Jumpers list of also rans after friday.

Then I'd love to see Middlesboro and Somerset play. They have 3-4 kids that are awful fast. If the jumpers win, they win, but the Dragons are very well conditioned. I've not seen them breathing hard yet, and I still doubt I will. Everyone has their opinion, and the Jumpers and the Dragons will decide it Friday night. The last time the jumpers saw as quality a D as Harlan, they lost.

Im just dying to hear which team Harlans D compares to that we have lost too? I know they run the same scheme as Danville because the D coordinators are brothers or something like that?

P.S. someone correct me about the D coordinators if I am wrong.

Harlan is good, but Somerset played a BRUTAL pre-district, and I would guess the Danville D was something better.

I'm sure Harlan does in fact, have a quality defense. I think what you're missing in all this is the fact that the much-maligned Somerset defense has improved. If you look at my first post in this thread you might be a little suprised: in district games Harlan is giving up 13.6 points per game, Somerset is only giving up 17.2--a difference of 3.6 points per game against the same competition. I just don't think Harlan has enough of a better defense to outweigh the Jumpers advantage on offense and special teams, and they have seen some pretty good defenses this year and have moved the ball on all of them.

I SAID, the last time they saw a quality D they lost. I didn't SAY, that our 1A team was of the same level as theirs. Harlan's D is the class of our district, just like Somerset's O is the class of our District. It is fitting that it has come down to these two teams.

I'm not missing a thing, unless you are too.You can preach until Friday. I can preach until Friday. I won't relent, and you won't. Come Friday the boys will decide. Then probably in 2 more weeks, they will decide again. Harlan won't be rolling over for the Jumpers, and like I believe I said to you a few weeks ago, I hope the Jumpers are as over confident as you are.

You need to read posts before you comment on them. I never compared the two.

Harlans stingy D will slow down Somerset in the begining but it won't last long,

Somerset 35

Harlan 7

Harlan's D is the best in the district, but only by 3.6 points per game over Somerset against the same competition. Somerset's O is 20 points per game better against the same competition. I can promise that the players and coaches are not over-confident--just ready to play. I said after the Cumberland game that I felt like the rest of the district was in real trouble and so far the Jumpers have done nothing to prove me wrong--I don't think they'll start this week. :thumb:

  I have no comment on this one! We are 5-4, far from over confident! I will stop there before I get in trouble.

yes they are brothers and i believe they run very similar schemes. Yes Cole is by far the fastest person they have seen this year. However i do not think the jumpers have the overall team speed of m-boro. Sounds like poor Harlan shouldn't even make the trip by the way some of you talk.

Oh yeah. That big loss to Danville looks a little worse after what Frankfort did to the Ads.

2 things.

1st, I think they HAVE seen a better quality D this year, and did lose, but it was better quality D. Not that Harlan has a bad D by any measure, but it will not be the best Somerset has faced. I can read and did read. You were making a point about defenses S'set has faced. Harlan has a good D, but Somerset can beat it with speed, fairly easily, IMO.

2nd, I don't think that Harlan has seen the total speed of an Offense like they will see friday. Middlesboro's is close from a running team, but last time Harlan saw a team with speed like Somerset has, they lost fairly big. Somerset has fast weapons all across the field.

Just to throw in a little tid-bit of historical evidence as to why I think this game WILL be close.

In this newly created series with Harlan, both teams have been blown out once by the other team and the other game (2003) Somerset escaped with a 7 point win (21-14). Eric Perry knows Somerset and he knows Jay Cobb. He's beat him at while at Garrad County and Harlan, and his brother has made a past time out of beating them while at Danville. This game will be close! Everyone said the same things that are being said now in 2003 when, as I mentioned above, Somerset escaped by the skin of their teeth against a very mediocre Harlan team. Yea, Somerset will shut down Harlan's offense for the most part because it is easily done with some decent speed. However, I wouldn't be surprised if JB Donahue and Eric Perry have some surprises for the Jumpers. I am going to stick with my previous prediction of Harlan escaping with a narrow victory. I know this could go either way but I am going to have to go with my team in this one.

By the way, the home team has never won in this series yet! Keep that in mind both now, and in the playoffs because these teams will likely see each other again.

Daddy Cat and Dragon Pappy, calm down for Christ sake… Opinions are like you know what’s, everybody has one and thinks that theirs doesn’t stink. Just watch the game and see what happens. Should be a good one, might not be though.
