Why do they not track assists?

Probably because they are so subjective. Points are points universally. Atts are atts universally. FTs are FTs universally. Rebounds are rebounds universlly. Assists from one team to the next may not remotely resemble each other. When the Big O had his triple double an assist had to lead immediately to a lay-up with no more than one dribble (my memory). Assists today may be nothing more than a pass from Westbrook to Anthony who launches an uncontested 30 footer. Assists today are not cut and dried by a non-subjective definition and in the NBA example much easier then years ago.

We played a game last year and our stat guy had a player on the other team with 7 ast and 8 Reb. They put an article in the paper the next day that he had a triple double 12 ast and 14 Reb.

Back door cuts? Pick & Roll pocket passes? Kids are making plays. Their stats should reflect that.

Pick and rolls and back door cut are both a pass that leads to a shot without hesitation, just catch and shoot. I would count them. If you pass it to a player and he takes 2 dibbles and pulls up for a 12-15 footer, then no assist.

How about out of bounds, baseline throw in? Double picks opens player for pass and easy uncontested bucket. Bet half teams call it an assist, the other half say no way....it was a designed OOB play and the picks created the bucket, not the idiot proof pass. Just pointing this example of how subjective the stat can be.

A lot of schools are now using programs such as Krossover (mentioned below) or similar such as Hudl. Kind of takes out the bias in that case.

Probably these great film aids only add consistency when the "taggers" are all using the same definition of assist.

If they had charted assists when the Big O played like they do in today’s game he would have set assist records that would have never been touched.
