Coach Kevin Wallace, Bowling Green Purples....

Featured Replies

Coach Wallace will be going for win number 300 this Friday night against South Warren.

Wallace is also 254-40 at Bowling Green. He has some nice jewelry to go along with those wins. I think he can get a few more rings before he hangs it up.

Great job, Coach. You are one of the best. Youve had a lot of talent but you also have assembled a great coaching staff.

Hoping you get #300 this Friday night!

Coach Wallace is one my favorite Coaches!

Big year for Bowling Green Football and Coach Wallace.

Good luck to Coach Wallace on reaching this milestone. And to the Purples.

PurpleHaze would have been ecstatic. :D

How old is Coach Wallace?

2C,

I'm honestly not sure how old Coach Wallace is, but I know he got his very first coaching job as Warren East's head baseball coach in 1984. He became BG's Head Football coach in 1996. I know he has put in more than enough years to retire from teaching. I honestly don't look for him to continue to coach "significant" more years, although I wish he would (selfishly).

Two of my favorite pieces on Coach Wallace were from the same interview back this May 2017 (I hope you like it too!):

1. What is one piece of advice that you would give to a coach wanting to win a state championship?

Players will never care how much you know until they know how much you care. This is a relationship business. The chemistry of a team full of positive relationships is a powerful mix that can allow a team to close in on their potential.

2. What does your program do differently from others in your league, conference or state that helped you win a state championship?

Any great high school program must have talented players who are committed to excellence, a supportive administration that will allow the head coach to put a talented and caring staff in place, plus a community that is willing to provide resources that will allow the program to have the equipment, technology and support that allows them to compete at an elite level. Bowling Green is lucky to have all of these components working for the continued success of our program.

Go Purples!!!

I think Coach Wallace is 57-58 if I remember correctly.

One of the most underrated characteristics of Coach Wallace is his ability to change and look ahead. When he first started coaching at BG the offense was a run first dominate offense out of basic I-formation. It was pretty much a version of the veer.

And they were really successful at it. The talent level there matched that offense. BUT coach Wallace had the foresight to see ahead that schools on the elite level were going to these shotgun, kind of high octane offenses. And I remember BG getting belted a few times by some of these teams and BG's outdated offense just couldn't keep up once they got behind.

So coach Wallace began changing and in the early 2000s started running some shotgun and it struggled for while. And for years BG seemed to run a split offense a lot of time, run old veer formation and some shotgun. But overtime the offense completely changed as coach Wallace perfected it more and more. He was also very blessed to have some talented QB's to be able to run that offense.

But for years now he has a successful system in place, a way to develop QBs over time so when it is their time they can be successful. Coach Wallace has put in a lot work to remake BG's system compared to the when he first started at BG. And he puts good people around him, which is why many of them eventually leave to become head coaches elsewhere.

It's be an amazing 20+ year run for Coach Wallace at BG. His early teams in the late 90s were very successful, but completely different in many ways from his teams now. I hope he continues to coach at BG for awhile. But it wouldn't shock me if he ended up at a much bigger program in another state when he if and when he feels like he wants to move on from BG.

Great post. All true. He is an advocate for his players to get college looks. He really has done well at getting kids to next level. I'm mainly talking about the kids that end up at the smaller schools. Big schools will always find the star players but the "good" players have to find the small schools. Coach Wallace helps make that happen.

My guess (strictly a guess) is he steps down with the class of 2020.
