Cutting classes will not make things more competitive at the district level. All it does is make the gap bigger between the largest and smallest schools. While you might pick up one more competitive game, you’re just as likely to pick up less competitive games. Classes exist because of disparity in size of schools. Cutting the number of classes doesn’t fix or address that problem.

 

I think people get a little too hung up on school population as the ultimate decider of quality of football. It does make a difference to a certain point then after that it doesn't matter. There are other factors that make as big of a difference as population. I would argue that there are at least couple of teams that could be moved with fewer classes that would set up more competitive 1 and 2 seed district races. However, my thoughts behind cutting the number of classes was to add some competition for the 3 and 4 seeds more then the 1 and 2 seeds. I think you are correct that there are a couple teams in each current class that no matter who you move into there district it wont effect the outcome. If we did a 3 and 4 seed NIT tourney making the districts bigger would at least make those lower games competitive. My thought behind it all is to keep the 1-9 and 0-10 teams at home.

You don't need to cut classes to keep 1-9 teams home. And while population isn't the ultimate decider, it is certainly one of the biggest, and is arguably the most predictable. Larger districts reduce scheduling flexibility for both the really good and really bad teams. People complain about strength of schedule now...what happens when teams who want to step up and play better teams have less opportunity to do so?? All so a 3-4 seed gets a more competitive

invitational tournament playoff matchup? It's a lot of maneuvering for not much of a payoff.

Let’s just have a tournament in each class for each seed. 4 champs in each class. 24 state champs.
