Ravens OL John Urschel Retires From NFL After CTE Study

Ravens offensive lineman and MIT mathematician John Urschel abruptly announced his retirement Thursday, just two days after explosive findings from a Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) study were released.

The 26-year-old’s decision to quit football was linked to the study, according to ESPN, which indicated that CTE was found in about 99% of NFL players’ brains that were donated to science after their deaths.

"This morning John Urschel informed me of his decision to retire from football," coach John Harbaugh said in a statement during the first full-team practice of training camp. "We respect John and respect his decision. We appreciate his efforts over the past three years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Urschel left without making a statement of his own.

In January, Urschel — a mathematics whiz who is pursuing a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — told HBO’S “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” that, at the time, his love of football outweighed the risks that come with suffering concussions.

"I recognize that this is somewhat irrational, but I am doing it," he said. "It's more important to me that I'm able to do the two things I love. I don't know if people have really done things that I've done before. I don't know if they'll do it after me. But I enjoy carving out my own path and not listening to what people say I can and I can't do."

Urschel had already suffered a concussion two years ago and admitted that it hurt his “ability to think well mathematically.”

"It took me about three weeks before I was football-ready,” Urschel said. “It took me a little bit longer before my high-level visualizations ability came back."

Yes and no.

Good for him on making a decision about his health that's best for him, no issue with that.

Making said decision the first day of training camp, when his team was planning on him being a part of the roster this year, I take issue with that.

Smart man.

This is going to happen more and more IMO.

I'm very interested to see what the game of football looks like when I'm my parents age.

Whatever. Mangold still available if they're worried about filling that void and he wasn't even a starter for that matter. Teams and the league don't give two squirts of pee about players in general, kudos to this cat for having options and making a decision based on solid information.

Maybe so, but I look at it at a contract level, honor your contract.

At the risk of your health? come on man. Was his contract guaranteed? Answer that one.

Isnt the whole game of football a risk to your health?

Im sure some of the money he got from it was.

NFL can cut a player at anytime for just about any reason and not pay them a penny, I have no problem with a player leaving on his own terms whenever he wants to.

NFL Contracts are barely worth the paper they are written on.

Was his contract guaranteed?

Probably still on his first contract, I'd guess. I doubt he's got much guaranteed money he would need to pay back, if any.

Dudes are lined up and ready to be given the chance to play in the NFL.

I would love to see by comparison what a CTE study would find in other sports like Hockey, boxing, UFC, etc. Is it strictly a NFL problem, is it an any contact sport problem. Could possibly only having like one or two concussions in your life lead to it.

Also I just read a lot on symptoms for it. Two of the clinics that I read that have researched it listed possible symptoms with it. However stated still not sure if those symptoms are directly related to it. People can be shown to have CTE after death but never had symptoms or anything that effected their life while having it.

So seems there is still so much truly unknown about it. Especially since it can't be detected until after someone dies. Would love to see what studies would find in all contact sports. Would it be a high number in those sports too?

Good for him.

My biggest issue with CTE hysteria is that people do not know what it means, even those studying it. Heck, I may have CTE from just playing HS football or from a car wreck. But it is not a catch all diagnosis that means "you have CTE, that means you will be severely depressed and die at the age of 50" like some make it out to be.

Repeated shots to the head are not good for you. That is not breaking news.
