June 11, 20179 yr Taking a trip this week with the local DAV. Meeting tomorrow morning to catch a charter bus for DC and spending three days of guided tours before we head back Friday. On the agenda: - Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korea, Roosevelt, and WWII monuments - White House - Capital - meeting Rand Paul on the Capital steps - Arlington Cemetery - the Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider - the Smithsonian - Washington Cathedral - Embassy Row - and a night time tour of DC I'm already packed and ready to go.
June 11, 20179 yr You can easily stay the better part of an entire day in Arlington. One of my favorites.
June 11, 20179 yr The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is stunning in its simplicity. Again, time seems to vanish there. Try not to rush through it.
June 11, 20179 yr I'm so glad that you get to go. If you are lucky, there will be a WWII veteran visiting the memorial while you are there. If so, ask to get a photo with him. So few remain. In a short time, there simply won't be any more. In 2011, I took a high school class to DC. We met a hometown veteran (who was also a family friend) there. He loved taking photos with not only our school group, but every person who asked. He has since passed away and I am so glad that we were able to arrange that he go.
June 12, 20179 yr Have a great trip man! D.C. is a really cool city to visit. I spent a week there as a kid visiting the attractions you mentioned, was something I'll never forget. Last year I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days there while picking up a couple of kayaks, we got a hotel room on embassy row. first time I had a chance to see the embassy's actually and there is a lot to do in that particular area if your wanting to get out and have a good time. Spent the rest of our time on the Potomac paddling but was still able to get really close to some of the memorials.
June 12, 20179 yr I've been to D.C. twice. Both before 1995. I've seen everything except the WWII memorial. I'm not big on the presidents memorials but the war memorials are breath taking, if you appreciate what they stand for. My grandpa was a Chief Petty Officer in the Pacific theater in WWII. I used to cut his grass once a week. I vividly remember watching the dedication of the memorial on tv with him and my grandma. My mom retired from Delta and offered numerous times to fly him up there, but her was old old school and refused. He never saw it in person and that's a main reason I want to get there. Have fun and appreciate what it all means
