Who Could Have Beaten the Warriors?

Featured Replies

With the rules from back then, Piston would have broken them in half. Dramond would have had Lambeer so far in his head he would have probably kicked him in the 1st quarter of the 1st game and gotten tossed. Rodman guarding KD would have been fun to watch also.

I agree with this, plus the Pistons were deep enough to not lose momentum when the 2s came on. It is a huge compliment for the Warriors that you have to go back to basically then infancy of free agency to find teams that you feel comfortable matching up with them.

It really comes down to rules. If they play with rules of the 80s and 90s I think there are a few teams who can.

I understand the point people make about the Bad Boys beating up today's Warriors - but think of the moving screens GS could set...

This GS team is the most potent offensive team EVER - due in large part because they shoot the 3 better than any other "great" team in the history of the NBA. The Bulls of the 90s were terrific, but they couldn't score as efficiently as the Warriors - a statement you make about all teams prior to the last few years, when 3 point shooting has become a central offensive strategy.

I also think there are any teams that could defend GS when they are running and playing 5x5 the way they do. Certainly not the Celtics teams...

And - GS can defend.

Given how they've played throughout these playoffs I think we are seeing the best NBA team ever. I'd be interested to see modern analytics on that hypothesis after (not if) the Warriors win it all.

I am in the Pistons camp (God that burns to say that) due to match-ups. Of all the teams, they matchup the best across the board.

Zeek would be a match-up problem for Curry

Dumars guarded a young Jordan forever. Thompson will not be an issue.

The most interesting match-up is KD v Rodman. This isn't the Rodman from San Antonio and Chicago, so he wasn't near as flagrant (which is weird considering the Pistons). He was 6'8 and athletic enough to bug Durant.

Lambeer was a great perimeter shooter and would draw out any interior help.

Pistons were better than they allowed themselves to be remembered for b/c they were so dirty.

I don't think any of the teams from the past could beat them.

Under the current rules, I agree.

Under the current rules you just simply can't match up with them and none of those teams from the past were built to play this way.

The Bad Boys could defend the Warriors better than anyone else. In 2017 they beat them. In 1989 they sweep them.

Joe Dumars was labeled the Jordan Stopper until they got cocky and wrote a book about how to stop Michael Jordan called The Jordan Rules. Joe Dumars held MJ to about a 22-23 point average over a period in their lives. He can guard Steph or Klay on the Warriors. Easily. As could Isiah Thomas. Rodman on KD. Mahorn and Laimbeer could handle Draymond and ZaZa with ease. The Warriors then bring Shaun Livingston, Ian Clark and Javale McGee off the bench. Meanwhile the Pistons are bringing Mark Aguirre, Vinnie Johnson and John Salley off the bench.

Advantage: Bad Boys

They will always be one of the best teams I have ever seen. They ended the Celtics, beat the Lakers and bullied MJ until they got cocky and wrote a book about him.

Not surprisingly you and I are on the same page.

The 90s Bulls and Showtime Lakers could have beaten them also.

Unsure on the 80s Celtics but they beat everyone so I have to mention them too.

Oh and the Kobe/Shaq Lakers beat them also.

That was something else I thought about. A team with a truly dominant big man could slow them down and destroy inside. Shaq would average 35-18 a game vs them.

I'm not sold Rodman could guard KD.

I'm not sold Rodman could guard KD.

He was a bad dude. 6'8" with a wingspan reportedly between 7'2-7'4. He was every bit as athletic as KD and his only focus was defense and rebounding. And he was physical. He'd have made life difficult for KD. It would be sooooo much fun to watch.

I think that the 95 Rockets give them heck. That team shot the 3 well enough and played a predominantly small ball style with a transcendent Big in the Dream. Ellie, Smith, Maxwell, and Horry could spread you out. KD is having a field day there, but so is Olojuwan. Plus they had Drexler coming off the wing, even if he was a bit older.

They'd make him run. They would have to keep the triangle from affecting them defensively by doing that or pressuring Fisher up top.
