Jumper_Dad Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Obamas back on the South Side for Presidential Center event - CNNPolitics.com I know this was touched on in the Obama/Wall St thread, but I wanted to call special attention to it for one reason. I think the Obama's should be applauded for putting their money where their mouth is. Just as all of us have policy differences with whomever is in office, I truly believe each President that we have had is trying to do what what they feel is best for the country at the end of the day. I think all leave office with regrets and I think all are of them are inherently good people. We all, me included, sometimes get too hung up on the ® and (D) next to their names and don't give them credit when they do somethings that we should. The Obama's giving $2,000,000 personally to set up a jobs program in one of the most broken cities in our country should be commended by all...regardless of political affiliation.
Science Friction Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 JDad, I agree with you. I think this deserves applause. I also agree that most of our past presidents, at least the ones in my lifetime, have been inherently decent people. The Obamas, Bushes, Clintons, Reagans, Fords, Carters... all of them. We may differ politically with some of them but they were/are all pretty decent people. In particular, consider Gerald and Betty Ford and Jimmy and Roselyn Carter. Look at all the people who have been helped as a result of the strength, courage, and compassion of Betty Ford. And Mr Carter deserves tremendous credit for the many lives he has helped after leaving office.
Hellcats Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Our current president should match it. Seriously, I'm not trying to sully this thread. But what if the richest got in a charity competition to do the most good in our nation.

But what if the richest got in a charity competition to do the most good in our nation. Likewise, I am not trying to sully the thread but I just don't put this man in the same category of Mr Obama, the two Bushes, Reagan, Ford, or Carter. If he did something like this it wouldn't be because he cared so much for the cause but to help his brand. I just don't think he is a very good person, certainly not the caliber of Bush Sr/Jr , Reagan, Ford, or Carter. Let's face it, we have had some very decent and good men assume the office of President. And we've have had a few not so good guys. Most of the ones in my lifetime, while maybe not great Presidents, have been quality men.

But what if the richest got in a charity competition to do the most good in our nation. I don't think we can call on any sitting President to match donations...once out of office then it would certainly be in line for one former POTUS to challenge another to match donations to a charity. Maybe Mr Obama and Mr Trump will work together the way GHW Bush and Clinton did, that would be great.

Bush 41 and WJC formed quite the friendship after their presidencies, as did Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Four good guys.
Science Friction Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 Wonder where the money came from? They probably withdrew it from their bank account. Would be my guess.

Science Friction Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 In short, Trump has made his self-declared philanthropy a part of his personal “brand.” But when queried about his contributions, he has always refused to provide any precise information or documentation and falls back on wanting to keep his giving private.
