May 5, 20179 yr Students protest class focused on Greco-Roman culture because it’s too white – TheBlaze This seems so silly and is a bad look on this student group. I hope a university focused on learning does not cave. Anyone who agrees I suggest you read the book " Greeks and Romans Bearing Gifts", you can not have a well rounded understanding of history and its influence on todays culture without a class like this.

I would think the understanding of Greco-Roman culture and their great minds is a non political issue. If you boycott minds like Aristotle and Plato what are you trying accomplish.
May 6, 20179 yr 1. I say go to college somewhere else. 2. Modern interpretation of some Greek thinkers is not good. Support for slavery and class systems doesn't translate as it did a century or so ago. The college probably does need to offer more than this one are of study.

Is not always an option for students. 2. We study other travesties of history and are able to put them in proper perspective, should be able to do it with this as well.

This is a private college, so, yes, there are more options. 2. I agree with you, but something tells me this course isn't being taught that way, thus the uproar.

Most people don't have the finances to switch schools every time a professor or student group gets upset about something or does something stupid. Private school or not. Duke is a private school and if my daughter was going there, we couldn't just pull her out on a whim.

Duke is a private school and if my daughter was going there, we couldn't just pull her out on a whim. What does on a whim mean? Your daughter can apply to other schools while finishing of the semester at Duke and then begin at a new school the following semester. If she is smart enough to land at Duke then I guarantee she will have her pick of colleges to choose from with plenty of scholarship money waiting on her at a lot of schools.

I used that as an example...could be any school. It is a long process to get academic scholarship money and even harder once enrolled at another school...you can't just jump from school to school because you feel like it unless you are personally financed. If you were at Duke for instance and decided to leave due to a reason like this after the spring semester, I'd bet you'd have to sit out an entire year before getting academic scholarship to another school as all of those decisions are made very early in the year. Applying in April or May would probably mean missing an entire school year.
May 6, 20179 yr How is choosing where you go to college at not always an option for students? I meant if you are already there, it's not always an option to leave due to family or financial reasons. So you may have to stay at a school that suddenly allows censorship of portions of history.
May 6, 20179 yr What? Why? You strike me as a like or lump it guy. Either way I would expect plenty of research into a private college like the one in the midst of controversy. What was the story a few years ago about the kid who was offended at one of the private Christian colleges in the state over gay rights? He should have known that would be an issue before he walked on campus before his first class. BYU and celibacy is another. People you have to know what you're getting into!
