United passenger threatened with handcuffs to make room for higher-priority traveler

Featured Replies

I have been in customer service my entire career and it is hard. And it is a pet peeve of mine that people think it is a low-skill job. It requires the highest level of what we call soft skills to be successful. And not everyone can do it. But that doesn't mean that because someone made a mistake they aren't good at it. I hate sweeping generalizations and exaggeration. And I really hate when people think customer service is a black and white kind of choice. Every single customer is all on board with policies and procedures....Until their particular situation needs exception. Then said policies and procedures are unfair, etc. That does not excuse the treatment of Dr. Dao. But let's address the real issue here, not go crazy about policies that are enforced successfully 99.999% of the time.
Customer Service has either been a piece of my job or my main job for the last 20 years. Once again you nailed it. I love the part you say about everyone is ok with terms until they are affected by them. Its that point where the true test of customer service skills begin. No one gets it right 100% of time but you have to put your people in the best position possible to make the right choice.

Did it ever say who the higher priority passenger was?

I agree RM.

The real issue is For Profit Corporations (the Airlines) colluding with our Government (whatever security or Police force it is/was) to use Force, and in this case bludgeon, non-violent citizens that stand in the way of additional Corporate Profits.

Seriously?

I don't think I even want to try to respond. This is exactly the type of overreaction I am talking about

Seriously?

What part am I missing. Guy was taken off after paying a 1,000 for a seat for someone who was higher priority? I was wondering if it was some famous actor, politician, etc. I never saw if it said who or anything?

What is wrong in asking that?

You can call it what you want but it is a good description of what happened and it has far reaching implications if our Government allows it to continue.

In your opinion.

In your opinion.

It is more than opinion, we all saw what happened and at this point there is NOTHING to stop it from happening again.

That is a gross over statement, G.

How?

Policies should be used as guidelines to follow, but everything shouldn't be black and white.

It's our hospital policy not to let homeless people just loiter in our ER lobby, but in the winter time when it's 10 degrees outside with a windchill of -15 degrees I'm not going to come in and kick out 2 or 3 homeless people that are seeking shelter when I come into work at 6 am. Sometimes you have to take use common sense and handle situations differently, not just go by what the policy says.

Nice spring day and homeless guy refuses to leave no matter what you (or any hospital staff members) say. What now?

Hey Ru, you keep talking about those "evil corporations". Remember without those large "evil corporations " you (and many others) wouldn't be enjoying the retirement you are. Joe's Lawn Care with 7 employees wasn't the one building that retirement portfolio I can guarantee you that.

Sure large corps have their issues but they also afford a LOT of people a lot of luxuries.

Those Corporations (which Joe's Lawn Care is one or a LLC or they are cheating the Government) do stimulate the economy in many ways which we all benefit from. However, the scary part is the Corporations are pumping so much money into the system that in this case the Government has given the Airline Industry arrest powers by proxy to increase their Corporate profits.

Getting ready to board a United flight to Chicago. They emphasized "Flying the Friendly Skies" several times throughout the pre boarding messages.
