The argument for banning alcohol and keeping pot illegal

Mike Baxter was chastised in the other thread for his stance on pot. Hey, I'm all for people having the freedom to do whatever the hell they want to do, even if its bad for them. If you want to smoke or drink, by gosh, go for it as long as you don't harm another person. However, please keep in mind how uninformed you may appear if you try to maintain that marijuana is a harmless drug. Marijuana is FAR from harmless. There is four times the amount of tar in one joint than in a cigarette. One of the most dangerous toxins occurs in this tar phase and is a key factor in promoting lung cancer. And this is just the beginning of the dangers. So, by all means, knock yourself out. Puff that weed. I'm all for you being able to kill yourself if that's your choice. Just don't pretend that recreational pot use is harmless.

I am for the legalization of recreational marijuana. I do not believe that marijuana should be even remotely linked to other drugs such as meth, heroin, etc. I do not believe these other drugs should be legalized. But I believe that we should support more programs such as needle exchanges etc. as these programs have saved countless lives.

My comparison by no means can be deemed as scientific, but just for kicks.

Say that "Person A" smokes a pack of cigarettes a day, which equals 140 cigarettes a week.

Say that "Person B" smokes one joint a week, and because it really only takes about 3 or 4 good puffs to obtain a buzz, "Person B" stretches that one joint out for an entire week to get recreationally high 4 to 5 times within a week.

If one joint has 4 times the tar than one cigarette then "Person B" is inhaling the equivalent to about 4 cigarettes a week compared to the pack a day cigarette smoker who smokes 140 cigarettes a week.

Not claiming that even smoking 4 cigarettes a week is a good idea for anyone, but it is considerably much less that 140, and honestly I don't know anyone who smokes a pack joints a day.

5 joints a day would equate to a pack of cigarettes, but even 5 joints a day is pretty excessive, and most who are aiming to achieve a high would feel it to be a big waste to smoke that much pot each day.

Most pot smokers, if they're not sharing a joint, will take a few hits and put it out, and if they're a daily pot smoker who keeps upping their buzz every 4 of their 16 waking hours will smoke perhaps the equivalent to one joint a day which now has them up to smoking the equivalent of 16 cigarettes a week, which is still considerably much less than the 140 for the pack a day cigarette smoker.

I think we can all agree that smoking anything is poor for your health. No doubt that firing up a joint affects your lungs, among other things. But if that's your concern, perhaps you should support the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Take a look at some of the products offered at pot shops in Washington, Colorado, etc. They have edible mints, chocolate bars, mouth spray, vaporizers and numerous other options that aren't nearly as detrimental to your health as inhaling marijuana smoke. As recreational marijuana advances, so will the availability of products that allow usage without the negative health effects. Unfortunately, much of that progress is currently stalled or delayed due to the federal prohibition.

I will say for the 100th time I'm for legalizing everything and allowing consenting free adults to make their own choices. If that ruins their lives or leads them to a life of crime so be it. But I do not think.comsumption should ever be a crime.

What if they OD?

They made their adult choice. Is it up to tax payers to pay for them to get the antidote? Or since it's a totally free country, are they just free to die from their choice?

They are free to do it, are they also not responsible for what it does to their body and their life.

Make everything legal and get rid of antidotes except for extreme circumstances where someone was unwillingly injected with a drug or something.

If you think I'm for taxpayers paying for the antidote you haven't read my posts.

Inside big pharma's fight to block recreational marijuana | Guardian Sustainable Business | The Guardian

My summary of the article:

People are turning to marijuana rather than opiates and prescription medication. The pharmaceutical companies don't like it and have actively lobbied against the legalization of marijuana. Opiate overdoses dropped by roughly 25% in states that have legalized marijuana (2014 study from Journal of the American Medical Association) while the pharmaceutical companies are spending millions and millions of dollars to oppose it. The Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America is regarded as one of marijuana's biggest opponents & spent nearly $19 million on lobbying in 2015.

This is not the first time I have seen these types of statistics. They seem to be very valid and well researched.

I am all for legalizing marijuana for the reasons stated in the research.

Which as someone who likes making money gets the initial reaction from big Pharma. But it is short sighted. They are the companies perfectly setup to sell marijuana if legal. Why not push for legalization and have another income stream.
