Floyd Central names Shawn Hager as their 1st football coach.

Shawn is a good person who is an average coach at best.

He ran the Sheldon Clark program into the ground. Granted the coal industry helped, but Shawn never worked the feeder programs let the middle school team fall by the way side and was not involved enough in the lower levels.

The man is great to the kids (more important than anything else) but does not have the foresight and the stratigic mind to build a program to elite status in my book.

He can win with equal or better talent but lots of people can do that.

I wish the new school the best of luck.

From what I hear the Floyd County school system is going to let every coach in the system go the beginning of May. Sounds crazy but a reliable source.Something about raises? Every coach in the county will have to reapply for their job. Super told the principals that the coaches that do not carry on doing the daily duties of their job in the mean time will not be considered at the time of application.

Someone else can verify this for me. Does this mean that Hager has been given the job but then has to reapply after May 1st, or is he exempt from what looks like to me, a witch hunt for some?

Technically in the fine print, a coaching job is supplemental, so its a year to year contract. Sounds a little crazy for the district to do that, but that's none of my business.

I'd imagine that with the district going from four high schools to three, there are pink slips going out to all and then immediate rehires to follow. There are likely tenured teachers from Allen Central and South Floyd that could end up replacing non-tenured teachers at Prestonsburg and Betsy Layne, and perhaps coaches as well. I'd imagine that is the reasoning behind letting coaches go and then rehiring.

I think you make solid critiques but the bolded I can't sign off on.

I can not point blame at Hager for what happened at Sheldon Clark whatsoever. No County in Kentucky was decimated by the coal industry like Martin County.

In addition, the previous Superintendent was shameful. Remember this is the same guy who fired Hager (and then had to rehire him) after Hager complained about raw sewage seeping in their locker room. Sheldon Clark High School also was literally falling apart and had to be closed at one point as a result.

Throw in the fact that to the West Johnson Central was building a powerhouse program under Matney with great facilities, to the North Lawrence County has been consistently solid and had a couple very good teams while SC was at their lowest, to the South you have Belfry.

There are very few coaches who could have survived that catastrophe!

Now with that said, you do make some good points and you definitely can question Hager as a "program builder" (which is what he has to be here). He took over Sheldon Clark post Matney and sustained a high level of success early on but began tapering off even before the Coal industry crashed. Even though he wasn't the C at Pburg you can definitely make the case that his time at Pburg was one of the lowest points in that program's recent history.

The feeder system at SC definitely took a step back compared to Matney... who is one of the masters of running a feeder program in the State.

Just my personal opinion here but I kind of think Floyd Central fumbled an opportunity for greatness.

Pburg is historically down and has a lot of bickering over Coach Derossett and his future. Allen Central actually seeemd to be on an up-tick. Betsy Layne is not a very strong program and the school that has benefited the most from the Pburg issues has been Pikeville.

With a new school, new facilities, a little bit of success coming in from Allen Central, and all the drama at the flagship program.. this would have been a time that they could have really drawn talent and create excitement.

They dragged their feet with a hire and missed valuable time in the weight room and in the Spring. Personally I would have went after David Jones with everything I had at my disposal. A young enthusiastic Coach that would create energy and kids would want to come play for because he is active in trying to get kids scholarships.

What is their schedule?

I agree whole heartedly. Jones would have been a HOMERUN!!

The only man who would build this program is the man who started both programs. Donnie Daniels. FCS messed up there. Nobody knows that area bettter than Daniels.
