March 22, 20179 yr Didn't throw it well. Didn't catch it well. Didn't hit it well. UC threw it well, caught it well and hit it well. Result is obvious. Key inning was a 4 run B2. UC had runners on 1B & 2B w/ 1 out after their 9 hitter popped up a bunt to McAvane trying to sac. (Maybe 5% of players would be smart enough to let that bunt drop and then try to turn the 5-4 DP and certainly wouldn't expect it from a FR.) Leadoff hits a chopper to the hole between SS and 3B. Hairston's only play would have been at 3B and that would have been close. Instead, it bounces off his glove and into LF. To add salt to the wound, Hairston redirected it enough so that it got by Stowers in LF. By them time the ball gets back to the IF, both runners had scored and leadoff is on 2B. They scored it a hit and no E because there are no real good choices there. In reality, Hairston would tell you worst they should have been is bases loaded and 1 out. Best case would have been 1B & 2B with 2 out. Leadoff advanced to 3B on the 2nd out and scored on a Baltimore chop that went straight over the mound. Hairston made a tremendous play to make it close at 1B (I thought he got him). That runner eventually scored after 2 BB and a pickoff attempt by Fitch at 3B where they likely had him, but the ball hit the runner in the back and went into LF. McAvane started the season as the SUN starter and, I suspect, will now be in the bullpen. Kid struggles with men on base and with control. Hoeing (who's had chances as well) should get the start next TUE at JPat against WKU. He pitched 0.1 and my guess is McDonnell got him in for that 1 batter to allow him to pitch on the road and mid-week. Other than Smiddy (0.2IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB & 1 balk), the bullpen was strong and gave the Cards the chance to get back into things. Wolf was lights out in 2.1IP and Thompson allowed a H in 1IP but had 2Ks with good velo & location. Ellis was the shining star on offense going 2-2 w/ 2BB. Bottom 3 in the order as well as the 2 & 3 hitters took the collar (although Fitch had 2BB). Interesting to see the DH batting 9th. Says you're pretty happy with your everyday players when you can do that. Sort of glad they got the undefeated monkey off their back mid-week before going to a tough NC State team this weekend. Usual motto for most college teams in conference on the road is "let's take 2 of 3 and avoid getting swept at all costs." That makes the Friday night starter a huge role. McKay has done it so far. Let's see if he can do it against good competition on the road. I'll be there to see it.
March 22, 20179 yr Author CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati baseball team handed No. 1 Louisville its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, beating the Cardinals 6-3 at Marge Schott Stadium. Freshman Nathan Kroger (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) made his first-career start for the Bearcats to pick up the win while junior David Orndorff (Pasadena, California/Pasadena Polytechnic) earned his third consecutive save to secure the victory. The win was the biggest in program history and the first time the Bearcats have ever beaten the No. 1 ranked team. The loss was the first of the season for Louisville which entered the game at 19-0 and was the last undefeated team in the NCAA. The Bearcats never trailed in the game after opening the scoring in the first inning and adding a big four-run second inning to extend the lead. Junior Kyle Mottice (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Jackson) led the offense with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored while junior Joey Thomas (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and freshman Eric Santiago (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame Green Pond) also added a pair of hits. // NOTABLES - With the win, Cincinnati improves to 10-9 on the season while No. 1 Louisville suffered its first loss and moves to 19-1. - Kroger earned his first-career win while Orndorff picked up the save in the third consecutive game for the Bearcats. Zellner responded by locking in on the mound, striking out back-to-back batters and getting a groundout to Mottice to escape with the Cincinnati lead intact. Top of the Ninth Orndorff entered in the ninth and tossed a perfect frame, including a strikeout to Devin Hairston to end the game and secure the biggest win in UC program history.
