Oldham vs. Simon Kenton - The Region's "blue bloods" (no pun intended) take on the team that has been the region giant over the past decade. At one time, Oldham's ladies were the most dominant team in the 8th, winning 12 titles between 1977 and 1994. But 1994 was a long time ago - this crop of Lady Colonels wasn't even born then. First year coach Chris Jefferson has a done a remarkable job with an extremely young squad, whose top players are mostly freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore twins Sophia Head and Alexis Head, along with senior Kylee Neurenberger all average 11.7 - 11.8 ppg to lead Oldham, but freshman reserve center Lakynn Goldsmith has been tremendous of late. Oldham may have picked a bad year to face SK, though - the Lady Pioneers are still smarting from last year's upset loss in the region finals to Trimble County. Niece is one of - if not the - most complete guard in the region, and SK has size, speed, and experience in its corner. SK won its fifth consecutive 32nd district title this year and hopes to go back to the Big Dance; they last played in the Sweet 16 just two years ago.

 

Anderson Co vs. Carroll County - haven't seen either of these two teams this year, but Anderson has really blossomed in a season many thought that they might be rebuilding a bit. AC has 9 players who have played in 20 or more games, and 5 average 7-13 ppg. Carroll County is trying to regain some past glory; the Lady Panthers last won a region tournament game in 2007, when they defeated Walton-Verona in the first round before losing to South Oldham in the semis.

 

Trimble Co vs. Grant Co - Trimble County, the defending champs, looked very, very polished and precise in running through the 29th. The Lady Raiders won their third consecutive district title, won the 8th region All-A tourney, and look very much ready to defend their 8th region title. TC has yet to lose a region game this year, going 17-0 to date....they haven't played either SK or Anderson, but are 6-0 against the other tourney participants. Grant County hasn't played Trimble this year. The Lady Braves are one of two teams in the tournament with a losing record, but Grant is on a bit of a roll of late, winning 8 of their last 12 games.

 

Owen County vs. Spencer County - Owen County is back with another 20+ win team....led by Alex Clifton and her 17.3 ppg / 7.8 rebounds, the Lady Rebels come in as the champions of the 31st district and winners of 8 of their last 10 games during which time they went 3-1 vs. tourney teams. Spencer County, playing in the tough 30th district against perennial powers Shelby County and Anderson County, is relishing their first region appearance since 2009, when they lost to Simon Kenton in round 1. The Lady Bears may be a dark horse; though they went 0-4 against Trimble and Anderson, their loss to Trimble was by just 5 points and two of their losses to Anderson were by respectable margins of 9 and 14. They beat Collins twice and Walton-Verona once - both 18-win teams.

 

Pegasus Sports will air the ENTIRE girls' 8th region, both live and archived indefinitely on the website. Broadcasts will be AUDIO in the first round; the finals and perhaps the semi-finals will be on VIDEO.
