Final

Tale of two halves (well, the first half and the third quarter). Augusta played slowdown as they needed to. Both defenses played well, Mason missed three bunnies in the last couple minutes of the second quarter and it was 9-8 after 1, 20-16 at halftime.

 

Third was a different story as Mason ratcheted up the pressure a bit and got a couple of transition buckets. Pretty much smooth sailing from there; Panthers may have waited a little too long to come out of the packed-in zone. Dunaway in foul trouble for much of the game but Lofton, Fox and Boyd picked up the slack.

Augusta--Laycock 12, Johnson 8, Cordle 3, Shoemaker 8, Philpot 4, Mains 1. (36)

Mason has to play better than they did tonight to win Thursday. Dunaway could not score and commits silly fouls, team missed alot of easy shots and only shot 5-14 from FT line. Levi must be on the floor for Mason to win. Must play better Thursday.

Best team won; but, Panthers put up a valiant effort. Props to Biggs for having Dunaway overplay Shoemaker's left side, forcing him to utilize his right hand that had a finger broken in the last game. Dunaway was exceptional defensively before fouling out late in the 4th. Augusta just not able to makeup for their leading scorer's limitations. Coach Kirk has done a yeoman's job with this inexperienced squad.

Royals use big 2nd half to beat Augusta 54-36 in district opener

Augusta controlled the tempo in the first half and it was a four-point game at intermission, but Mason County sped up the game in the second half and the Royals beat the Panthers 54-36 tonight in the upper bracket semifinal game of the 39th District Tournament at the Fieldhouse.

 

There were three ties and four lead changes in the first half and Mason County had a 20-16 lead at the half.

 

The Royals outscored the Panthers 18-7 in the third quarter and led by as many 23 points in the fourth quarter.

 

Mason County shot 56 percent from the field in the second half.

 

Jaylen Lofton scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the second half.

 

Ty Fox had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

 

Mason County advances to the championship game Thursday night and will play the winner of Tuesday's game between St. Patrick and Bracken County.

Absolutely correct. Too many ticky-tack fouls (and not just from Dunaway) last night.

Great season for my young Panthers. After losing so much to graduation from the Regional Runner Up group, the kids and Coaches over performed IMHO. Freshmen and Sophomores this year got great experience and I expect all of them to be much improved next year. To the Seniors, you represented yourselves well on and off the court and gave it all you had. To our loyal fans, I think it's great we show up and support our kids no matter what......

..And that is truly what makes Augusta such a special place. Good luck to Mason as they play on, they simply were the better team last night.

Cordle and Philpot both impressed last night. If they can fill in some other guys in there I think the Panthers will be just fine as they keep growing.

I saw that. Was he ill? Or coach just wanted his Seniors to get some more minutes?

I thought Philpot and Appleman should have started all year.

I honestly don't know. I wondered myself but I assume he wasn't well. It certainly wasn't for lack of ability to contribute or discipline. The 3 mentioned will definitely start and contribute greatly next year.
