I couldn't agree more. The information that was given to me by 2 members of the coaching staff at that time was that Ryle basically had (1) donor who wrote a check for $750K.

And that is a great thing, absolutely and Ryle was very fortunate to have such a great donor. Hoping that something one day can be worked out for the other 3 schools to get turf. I know it's a tough task for the school board but it certainly would be nice to bring the other 3 less fortunate schools who desperately need their fields updated. Far too many games being played with football and soccer for these grass fields to hold up year after year.

I'm sure if the community asked the school board to raise taxes and set the funds aside for turf fields for the schools they would listen. Otherwise it's probably not going to happen. People would go crazy if the BOE spent 3-4 million on football/soccer fields.

It would be great if Conner could get a turf field. I've been going to games there for years and other than replacing the track a few times, I don't think they've ever done much to improve the actual field. It would be good for the kids and the community that supports them.

If you raise local taxes then you get less money from the state.

But they do not go crazy for new high school buildings in that count,y instead of expanding the current ones, not to mention the added administration costs for the new high schools. I am sure I am not smart enough to understand how building more high schools is more cost effective than expansion.

 

Seeing the promo for the fundraiser it looks like a community effort, not an organizational effort.

The district has to build new schools. The state will only let you get so big. Around 75% of the elementary and middle schools are over capacity. Trust me, I think the county only needs 2 high schools. But that's a conversation for another day.

First, you think that if he BOE asked to raise taxes and set money aside for turf people would listen. Meaning they would be receptive to the idea. Then you said if the BOE spent money on the fields people would go crazy.

 

No, the district does not have to build new schools, they can expand. Doesn't having more schools just increase overhead as opposed to expanding schools? Number of schools is not a conversation for another day because if they managed the existing funds and did not race to build schools then there might be money to have modern facilities at the current schools.

 

If the BOE would have elected to install turf at Cooper when it was built, then yes state money could have gone towards it, because it would have been part of the overall construction of the school and related facilities. In KY, the school districts pay about 67% of the costs of new capital construction and the state pays the remaining 33%. With it being a new school it would have been cheaper to install turf from the beginning rather than going back years later and doing the install.

 

Based on the local school district having to pay about 67% it would have cost the BOE about 500k for turf, using the 750K amount it cost Ryle to install turf. Actual cost would be less because work was going to be done on the field regardless of what type of turf was going to be used.

 

Then they could have allocated funds to to the other schools, when they do capital projects for the other two schools that need work on their old and outdated athletic facilities. Or just spend the money on them like other districts do. Maybe do a match of any fundraising that is done by the schools?

 

Secondly, what do you mean the state will only let you get so big? This is news to me, I have never heard of that before.

Why do you think Scott County is splitting. Why not build one big school and move everyone there instead of having half the kids stay in the old building? Because the state will only let schools get so big before they have them split up. I think it's crazy myself, but that was what I was told by someone from the state a few years back.

 

And just because Ryle already has turf doesn't mean the district won't have to send equal money there way. You end up with a total 2.25 million outlay for fields on top of the 500k at Cooper. Hard to justify when you've got a new middle school being built, converting the Toyota Building into a regional high school, and another elementary school on the drawing board for the Mann and New Haven area (my guess) since those two schools are busting at the seams. It's not happening unless the people in the community want it to happen and step up with financial resources. I hope Conner can get it done.

Guess we will see how the new high school that I am hearing is slated to be built in 2022 handles things. I agree that the boat was clearly missed by not installing turf at Cooper when it was first built. Good luck to Conner on their project and I do hope that they are able to pull it off and a similar model could be used at both Cooper and Boone Co. who severely need their fields replaced.

I would imagine that since the Boone County Board of Ed gave Conner the green light to begin their own fundraising efforts for a turf field that Cooper and Boone are also. Should be no stopping any of the schools from proceeding.
