One comment that I tend to agree with is, although he doesn't get the top recruiting class every year, he does manage to get a couple of the top 5 prospects every year. And in women's basketball that is huge because unlike men's basketball there is a big drop off after the top 10 players in the country and the next 90. In addition, his top 2 or 3 girls he signs each year usually plays for him all 4 years. That's not the same with men's basketball, although it would have sure been nice to have had players like Wall, Cousins, Davis, Booker, Towns, etc around for 4 years. There's no doubt Gino is a great coach, but the statement that he hasn't had the number 1 recruiting class in a while is misleading. He doesn't have to have the number 1 class to be dominate. Just land a couple of the top tier players each year and stockpile the mega-stars to build powerhouses. And win titles. That's the biggest kicker and why being the #1 recruiting class in Women's Basketball, just doesn't matter in the slightest.
February 15, 20179 yr The thing I like most about Geno is that he doesn't dodge anyone. He wants to play the toughest schedule possible. The non-conference schedule they play is incredible. In 13 non-conference games, they played and beat: Six of the remaining current top ten: Maryland(2), Baylor(4), Florida State(4), South Carolina(6), Notre Dame(7), and Texas(8) Three additional top 25 teams: Ohio State(12), Depaul(17), and Kansas State(24) Unfortunately, outside of South Florida, the conference is not very good. Why would he worry about dodging anyone? He's basically got a semi-pro team every year. He has to play a lot of teams outside his conference to have any resemblance of competition.

If you get two of the top 5 prospects every year, you will have the number one recruiting class every year (or certainly almost every year)... I just think Geno is the total package when it comes to coaching. Keep in mind when he got to UCONN, the program was nothing. He started from scratch. He is a great recruiter, he is a good game coach and he is a great teacher of the game. I just love watching his teams play...tons of player and ball movement and his teams are always very unselfish. They play very solid D as well... I think the fact that he gets his players for four years is huge. Many of them have improved A LOT due to his coaching IMO...

He played just as tough a nonconference schedule when the Big East was good. Others do dodge him though. In fact even Pat Summit would't play him anymore.
