More Bengals scratch your head WR Logic

Featured Replies

According to multiple reports Wednesday, the Bengals claimed undrafted rookie wide receiver Chris Brown off waivers when the Cowboys cut him after he spent all year on injured reserve with a broken foot suffered in training camp.

Mark this one under due diligence. They’d still like to re-sign veteran Brandon LaFell and were encouraged by sixth-rounder Cody Core’s play late in the season. But the Bengals saw a lot of the 6-2, 193-pound Brown during last year’s scouting process because they were fully vetting his running mate at Notre Dame, Will Fuller, and they liked him enough to inquire about him after the draft.

Brown was invited to the NFL scouting combine but chose to run at his Pro Day, where he clocked 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash, according to CBS Sports.com. He was a sprinter, long distance jumper, and high jumper for the U.S. Junior national track team in 2011 coming out of Hanahan, S.C.

Brown could be lining up for an audition with Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons. The scouting report from CBS Sports said, “There isn't much that separates (Brown) from others, but he makes the tough catches and pays attention to the details, including as a blocker and on special teams, which could keep him on a NFL roster.”

Bengals claim rookie WR from Dallas

maybe they're trying to fill out some practice squad stuff with hopes that he could be more, including a core special teamer. Jeez, not everyone is gonna be fit to play opposite AJ on the outside. Relax and repeat after me. It's two and a half months til the draft, it's two and a half months til the draft.

I'll go one step farther, do the gals draft a WR in the 1st round?

Not a head scratcher to me. They need bodies to look at. No doubt they missed Jones and Sanu last year in a big way. Much more than I thought. Please don't anyone tell me that they told everyone this last year.

They have to find a receiver that can stretch the field like Jones could. As great as AJ is, he just can't do it all. Eifert's health is huge. Big year for him. If he gets hurt again, how can you justify huge $$ to resign him whenever that is. Boyd and Core may work out and we already know what LaFell is. If either Boyd or Core can improve dramatically we have a decent chance of being in the hunt again.

I like Boyd. I'm not a huge fan of Lafell. He's serviceable. Eifert is the key, assuming AJ is healthy. One addition to that corps could put them on another level.

So, do you think they'll draft one first? Early?

In my opinion, there is very little chance they do anything but go front seven defense with the first pick. Unless something very odd happens in the first 8 picks, I expect an edge rusher at 9.

Some mocks have Reuben Foster there.

Agree Front 7 on D is the way to go unless someone slips we can't say No to.

Complete agreement with this. I honestly are very high on both Boyd and Core. I think Boyd is capable of playing more on the outside than we think. Plus Core honestly reminded me a lot of Jones his rookie year. I think Core is going to be a good one. I think they will try to draft a straight up speed receiver if there is one in the middle rounds. However I don't see them picking one early.

I don't think they go early unless one falls to them they just can't pass up and I don't know enough about the draft yet to know if there is one that would warrant it. I think they will go DE that can get up field. Their speed has diminished a bit. They need another head hunter like Burfict, also. There is a huge fall off defensively with aggression when he isn't playing. He will not play 16 games with his concussions and he is on a short leash for penalties I would have to think.

Dunlap is a monster but teams handle him using double teams with TE's or chipping help. Michael Johnson and Will Clarke just didn't get the needed pressure consistently.

They have usually drafted best available rather than need. They may change it up.
