Mother arrested and kids taken for homeschooling - Documentation not complete

Featured Replies

Ok, without opening the link, here goes;

One cannot just take their kids out of school and claim "homeschooling". Regardless of your views pro or con on homeschooling, there is a process the parents have to go through and certain qualifications attained to ensure the children's learning needs are actually being met (KY ranks fairly low on this point when compared to other states from what I can gather). So, what qualifications does the mother have to homeschool her children (assuming she was the one actually doing it which seems to be the case)?

I get that some parents don't want their children in public schools and either can't afford a private school or maybe don't want that either, so they choose to homeschool their kids. That's perfectly fine. However, the personal, anecdotal experience I have had dealing with homeschool children leaves me with the notion that, on average homeschooling, at least here in KY, might be lacking in it's effectiveness.

My wife and I home schooled two of our children for one year and one of them for two years. We were very disappointed at the math skills that the public school was failing to teach them. Home schools in Kentucky are treated like private schools, or at least they were at the time. We had to name our school and submit a curriculum.

The year that we home schooled all three kids, we competed in the Governors' Cup academic competition. Our "school" finished third out of 17 schools in our region. If our family had have been larger, we might have finished second. It is really sad to watch the disparity between the top academic teams in the state and the worst - especially knowing that there is no real difference in the intelligence level of top students attending comparably sized schools.

It is my experience that home schooled children can and frequently do advance much quicker academically than those who attend public schools. Students at home get much more one-on-one attention and do not waste time on buses, moving between classes, being entertained by substitute teachers, etc., and parents do not have to deal with the bureaucratic crap that public school teachers and administrators do.

Wouldn't the CPS have to do a little investigation before they could take the kids away? I'll be waiting for Paul Harvey on this one.

Yep. There is more to this story.

Me and him what?
